Bulldogs Capture Third At State Softball Tourney

PEORIA -- Effingham St. Anthony High School took charge early and claimed third place in the Class 2A State Softball Tournament Saturday at Louisville Slugger in Peoria.

The Bulldogs whipped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and held Johnston City in check for an 8-1 win.

Cameran Rios got St. Anthony started in the right direction in the opening inning. She reached base on an error. With one out, Addie Wernsing followed with an infield single. Hailey Niebrugge reached on a fielder's choice that brought Rios home. Lucy Fearday followed with an RBI single and Sidney Kibler reached base on an error to bring in Wernsing. Anna Faber had an RBI single and the Bulldogs were up 4-0.

Meanwhile, Fearday kept the Indians off balance. She did not allow a runner on base through the first four innings. She struck out two and the defense played well behind her, getting the rest on ground outs and one fly ball.

St. Anthony had two runners on in the second but couldn't bring them home. But in the third with two outs, St. Anthony struck again. Anna Faber had a single and stole second. She came home on a triple by Abby Hatton. Hatton scored on a single by Stacie Vonderheide and the Bulldogs led 6-0.

The Bulldogs finished their scoring in the fourth with two runs. Adysen Rios led off with a double and stole third. With one out, Hailey Niebrugge was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Kibler drew a walk. Faber then brought the two runs home on a single.

Johnston City finally dented the plate in the fifth. Lilly Armes and Gabby Overturf both singled with Armes scoring the lone run.

Fearday went six innings, allowing one run on three hits, two walks and striking out six. Nora Gannaway came on to finish out the seventh with one strikeout.

The Bulldogs were on offensively, banging out 12 hits in the contest. A. Rios had a single and two doubles while Faber had three singles and drove in three runs. Hatton added a triple and an RBI. Fearday and Vonderheide had a single and an RBI each and Kibler had two RBI.

All three hits for Johnston City were singles. The Indians finished the season with a 30-7 record.

Coach Mikayla Taylor's squad finished with a 25-4 record.
