St. Anthony Downs T-Town to Win Teutopolis Regional; Other Softball Scores 5-19-23

The St. Anthony Bulldogs captured the championship of the Teutopolis 2A Softball Regional Friday, defeating the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes 14-4. The contest was decided by the 10-run rule in the bottom of the sixth inning when Lucy Fearday doubled home Adysen Rios and Addie Wernsing.

St. Anthony improved to 21-3 on the season and advanced to the Tolono Unity 2A Sectional. The Bulldogs will take on Bloomington Central Catholic at 4:30pm Tuesday, a game that we will broadcast. BCC won their own regional, defeating Normal U High 3-2. 

St. Anthony took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Cameran Rios tripled then came home on an error on a fielder's choice. 

Teutopolis answered with a four-run third inning. Estella Mette was hit by a pitch to start the inning. With one out, Erin Althoff singled. With two outs, Emily Konkel singled to load the bases, then Malea Helmink cleared them with a double to make it 3-1. A base hit by Kaylee Niebrugge brought home Helmink with a base hit and Teutopolis held a 4-1 lead. Unfortunately for the Shoes, those were the last runs they would score.

St. Anthony scored twice in the bottom of the third. Ady Rios singled to start the inning and advanced to second on an error. Lucy Fearday doubled home Rios, then three consecutive walks forced home Fearday to make it 4-3. 

The Bulldogs scored six times in the fourth. Cameran Rios singled, Adysen Rios sacrificed her to second, Addie Wernsing singled, and Hailey Niebrugge doubled to drive home Wernsing. Fearday walked, then Sydney Kibler doubled in Niebrugge. With two outs, Abby Hatton singled home Fearday and Kibler, then Stacie Vonderheide doubled in Hatton. 

St. Anthony put the game away in the sixth. With one out, Anna Faber singled and Hatton doubled. After a walk to Vonderheide, Cameran Rios singled home Faber. After a single to Ady Rios, Wernsing singled home Hatton. After a walk to Niebrugge, Fearday followed with her game-winner to provide the 10-run edge.

St. Anthony pounded out 17 hits. Cameran Rios had two singles to go with her triple, Adysen Rios singled twice, Addie Wernsing singled twice and walked, Hailey Niebrugge doubled, singled and walked, Lucy Fearday doubled twice and walked, Sydney Kibler doubled, singled and walked, Anna Faber singled and walked, Abby Hatton doubled, singled and walked twice, and Stacie Vonderheide doubled and walked. 

For Teutopolis, Erin Althoff singled twice, Emily Konkel doubled and singled, Malea Helmink had the big three-run double, Kaylee Niebrugge singled, Danielle Sarchet walked, and Estella Mette was hit by a pitch.

In the circle for the Shoes, Courtney Gibson went 5-2/3 innings, allowing 14 runs on 17 hits, walking eight and striking out two.

For St. Anthony, Lucy Fearday went six innings, allowing four runs on five hits, walking one and fanning nine batters.

Teutopolis finished its season with a 17-14 record.
