St. Anthony Wins Game One of 2023 City Series

The St. Anthony Bulldogs emerged a 5-4 winner in Game One of the 2023 City Series over the Effingham Hearts. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the first inning. Ady Rios walked and Addie Wernsing reached on an error and both came around to score. Anna Faber singled in a run and Abby Hatton got a base hit but was caught stealing to end the inning.

Effingham then tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a walk to Jerzi Bierman and a single by Raegan Boone then a passed ball to score Boone tying the game at 2-2.

St. Anthony scored in the second to regain the lead. Stacie Vonderheide was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Natalie Armstrong walked three straight batters to plate Vonderheide.

Effingham again tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Mya Harvey doubled to lead off the inning and a sacrifice and a fielder's choice tied the game.

St. Anthony scored in the fourth on a leadoff single by Cameron Rios, a stolen base, and a RBI single by Wernsing. They made it 5-3 in the fifth on a leadoff single by Hatton, a sacrifice and a RBI single by Cameron Rios.

Effingham scored in the sixth on a one-out single by Sidney Donaldson and a RBI double by Abby Cunningham, but the Bulldogs hung on for the one-run victory.

Lucy Fearday went the distance for St. Anthony, allowing five hits and a walk against six strikeouts. Natalie Armstrong also pitched a complete game for Effingham, allowing 10 hits and three walks and hitting a batter, allowing four earned runs while striking out two.

St. Anthony improved to 17-3 on the season, while Effingham is now 17-9. Game Two is today at 4pm at Bulldog Field. St. Anthony will recognize their seniors. The game will be heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com
