S. Central Wins Own Tourney, Area Softball Roundup

KINMUNDY -- South Central High School started the weekend with a loss to Newton on Friday in a regular season softball contest but came back Saturday to win its own tourney softball championship.

Newton tallied 13 hits and handed South Central an 8-3 loss. The two teams played to a 1-1 opening inning tie before the Eagles moved ahead 3-2 in the second then had two-run innings in the fourth and seventh around a run in the sixth.

Addy O'Dell had two singles, a double and three RBI for the winners while Avery Mulvey had two singles, a double and an RBI. Camryn Martin had a single and a solo home run. Alli Kirts finished with three singles, a double and three RBI.

South Central was led by Brooklyn Garrett with a single, double and an RBI and Abi Shuler and Kyra Swift with wo singles each.

South Central then hosted a tournament Saturday. The Cougars handed Cumberland a 13-3 loss in the opening contest in Pool A behind 15 hits.

Taegan Webster went five innings for the win, throwing a six-hitter with two walks and four strikeouts.

Jaylyn Michel had a single, double and an RBI while Ella Watwood had a single, home run and four RBI, Garrett had three singles and Kyra Swift had a single, triple and two RBI.

In game two, Cumberland defeated New Athens, 15-8.

South Central then won game three by a 13-3 count in five innings over New Athens.

Michel had a double, triple and two RBI while Webster had two singles, a triple  and three RBI.

In Pool B, Woodlawn defeated Altamont, 4-2;  Robinson won over Woodlawn, 12-1 and Robinson blanked Altamont, 15-0.

In the Woodlawn contest, Altamont held a 2-1 lead through three innings before Woodlawn tallied three runs in the fourth for the win.

Altamont outhit Woodlawn by an 8-4 count. Peyton Osteen had a single, double and an RBI while Sophia Pearcy had two singles and an RBI. Brianna Grunloh contributed two singles.

In the loss to Robinson, the contest ended in the fourth inning by a 15-0 count.

Altamont had only two singles by Pearcy and Osteen.

New Athens then edged Altamont, 3-2 for fifth place. Altamont held a 2-0 first inning lead. New Athens tallied one in the fourth and two in the fifth for the victory.

Altamont had double hits led by Lanie Tedrick with a double and an RBI and Adria Denton with a double.

Woodlawn blanked Cumberland 10-0 for third place.

In the championship game, South Central trailed Robinson 1-0 until the fifth inning then brought home three runs for the 3-1 victory.

The Cougars had six hits led by Michel, Webster and Garrett with a single and an RBI each.

Webster threw five innings allowing five hits, one walk and striking out six.

At Sullivan

Dieterich traveled to Sullivan and fell by an 11-1 count in five innings Saturday.

Sullivan ran out to a 5-0 first inning lead. Dieterich tallied a run in the third before Sullivan scored four more in the fourth and ended the contest with two in the fifth.

Dieterich had six hits in the contest led by Callie Faller with a double and Lucie Jansen with two singles.
