T-town Trounces Effingham In Softball

Teutopolis High School was on target . . . in hitting, scoring and pitching Monday evening in downing Effingham, 16-6 in five innings of softball action.

The Wooden Shoes struck early, scoring four runs in the first inning. With one out, Emily Konkel knocked out a home run. With two outs, Kaylee Niebrugge singled and Courtney Gibson doubled her home. Danielle Sarchet and Estella Mette drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Summer Wall was hit by a pitch scoring another run. Olivia Copple singled home a run and when the inning ended, the Wooden Shoes held the 4-0 lead.

Effingham came back with a single by Grace Bushur in the bottom of the frame and Riley Cunningham followed with a single. But with one out, the Wooden Shoes pulled off a double play to end the threat.

T-town came right back with four more runs in the second inning. With one out, Daisha Piedra drew a walk and Niebrugge followed with a double. Gibson drew a walk and Sarchet followed with a single scoring two runners. When the inning ended, the Shoes held an 8-0 lead.

The Hearts went up and down in order in the second.

In the third, T-town brought home two more runs to lead 10-0. Erin Althoff was hit by a pitch and Konkel followed with her second hit, a single. Effingham's Daelyn Dunston came up with a diving catch in right field for the first out. Niebrugge followed with a sacrifice fly that scored a run and a double by Gibson scored the second run.

The Hearts did punch through with a score in the bottom of the third. Bushur singled, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. She came hom on a single by R. Cunningham.

But the Shoes continued their scoring barrage with five more in the fourth. In the frame, Estella Mette singled, Summer Wall drew a walk, Althoff singled, Konkel got her third hit with a single, Niebrugge reached on an error, Gibson, Sarchet and Mette had singles. By the time the hitting had ended, the Shoes held a 15-1 lead.

T-town scored a final run in the fifth as Wall singled and came home on a single by Konkel, her fourth hit in five at-bats. The Shoes held a 16-1 lead.

But the Hearts weren't done yet. Jerzi Bierman led off with a home run to centerfield . Sawyer Althoff followed with a single and Daelyn Dunston drew a walk. Both advanced on a wild pitch and Althoff came home on another wild pitch. Bushur tripled home a run. Abby Cunningham reached on an error and Sidney Donaldson singled. With two outs, Tori Budde singled home the fifth run and the Hearts were within 16-6 and could have gone more innings with another run. But a strikeout ended the frame and the game.

T-town had 15 hits in the contest led by Konkel with three singles, a home run and three RBI, Gibson with a single, two doubles and three RBI, Niebrugge with a single, double and an RBI and Sarchet with two singles and two RBI.

EHS had 10 hits but couldn't string them together for runs until the final frame. Bushur had two singles, a triple and an RBI, Bierman a home run and an RBI and R. Cunningham and Donaldson with two singles each.

Gibson went the five innings allowing six runs on 10 hits, one strikeout and two walks. T-town improved to 13-3 on the season.

Effingham fell to 7-8.
