EHS Goes 2-1, S. Central, Newton Nab Softball Victories

Effingham High School claimed two victories while suffering one loss in weekend softball action.

The Hearts edged Champaign Central Friday, 12-11 in Friday competition. Central took a 3-1 opening inning lead and led 5-4 after two. Central then had a six-run third.

Effingham came back with a run in the fourth and seven in the sixth only to fall a run short.

The Hearts outhit Central by a 17-5 count but had four errors and delivered up seven walks in the contest.

The Hearts were led by Riley Cunningham with two singles, a triple and three RBI while Abby Cunningham had three singles and two RBI. Daelyn Dunston finished with three singles and two RBI while Saige Althoff added three singles. Sidney Donaldson had a double and an RBI.

Effingham then split an Apollo Conference doubleheader with Mattoon Saturday.

In the opener, the Green Wave edged the Hearts, 10-9, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Mattoon held a 6-5 lead going into the fifth. Both teams tallied two runs and Effingham moved into a 9-9 tie in the sixth.

The Greenwave outhit the Hearts by a 14-11 count.

EHS was led by A. Cunningham with a single, double and four RBI, Sidney Donaldson with two singles and two RBI, Jennifer Jamison with a triple and Mya Harvey with two singles.

The Hearts came back in the second contest to bounce Mattoon by a 14-2 count in five innings.

The Hearts had 11 hits led by A. Cunningham with a single, double and an RBI, Jennifer Jamison with two singles and two RBI, R. Cunningham with two singles and two RBI, Dunston with two singles and Tori Budde with a single and three RBI.

Saige Althoff picked up the pitching win, going all five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

At Mattoon

Windsor/Stewarsdon-Strasburg fell to two teams during Friday competition.

The Hatchets lost to host Mattoon 6-5 despite outhitting the Green Wave by a 14-10 count.

The contest went 10 innings with Mattoon winning in the bottom of the 10th. The Green Wave held a 4-3 lead after five innings and the score was tied at 5-5 in the sixth.

Karlie Bean had two singles and two RBI for WSS while Ella Kinkelaar added three singles, Sam Hayes a single, double and an RBI, Ava Richards a single and double and Alaira Frese two singles and an RBI.

Robinson then picked up a 7-5 victory over WSS.

Robinson stepped out to 3-0 lead and never looked back.

Bean led in hitting for the Hatchets with two singles, a double and an RBI while Freise had two singles and two RBI and Kinkelaar two singles.

South Central easily handled Webber Township (Bluford) by a 15-0 count in four innings Friday.

The Cougars stepped out to a 9-0 opening inning lead then tallied three in the second and third innings.

Taegan Webster threw a one-hitter.

South Central had four hits led by Laney Webster with a double, Kyra Swift with a single and two RBI and Lily Malone and Abi Shuler with three RBI each.

The Cougars improved to 9-4 on the season and return to action today, weather permitting against Teutopolis.

At Altamont

Newton came calling and picked up a 7-1 victory over Altamont in Friday play.

The Eagles edged out to a 2-0 first inning lead then had one-run innings in the third and fourth before scoring two more in the fifth and one in the seventh.

Altamont's lone run came in the bottom of the seventh.

Newton had nine hits led by Addy O'Dell with a single and triple, Lexie Grove with a single and double, Ava Kessler with a triple and an RBI and Emma Kidwell with a double and an RBI.

Altamont was led by Ellie McManaway with two singles and Peyton Osteen with a single and an RBI.
