St. Anthony, WSS Advance To NTC Tourney Title Game

Top-seeded Effingham St. Anthony and second-seeded Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg will square off for the championship of the National Trail Conference Softball Tournament after both teams claimed two victories each Wednesday at Evergreen Hollow Park.

St. Anthony opened the tourney by blanking St. Elmo/Brownstown, 10-0 in five innings behind the perfect game thrown by Stacie Vonderheide.

Vonderheide.went five innings and did not allow a hit or a walk and finished with eight strikeouts in the contest.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 opening inning lead then didn't score again until the fifth, bringing home eight runs.

Cameron Rios wielded the big bat for the Bulldogs with three singles, a triple and two RBI while Sydney Kibler added a single, double and two RBI and Addie Wernsing two singles and an RBI.

In the second game, Altamont edged Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 4-3 in eight innings.

The Indians held a 2-0 first inning lead before CHBC tied in the fourth and moved ahead 3-2 in the sixth. But Altamont knotted the score in the bottom of the seventh and won it in the eighth.

Altamont had seven hits led by Abby Goeckner with a double, triple and an RBI, Bailey Teasley with a single, double and an RBI and Olivia Eckhardt with a double and an RBI.

CHBC was led by Madison Cherry with a single and double, Sydney Dunaway with a double and an RBI and Marissa Summers with two singles.

In the third contest, St. Anthony blanked Altamont 7-0 to move into the title game.

The Bulldogs led 4-0 after the first then had a three-run fourth. Lucy Fearday went five innings allowing one hit, no walks and striking out three. Wernsing came on to throw two innings allowing no runs and one walk.

Vonderheide had two singles, a double and drove in three runs while Wernsing had a double and an RBI and S. Kibler a double. Haley Niebrugge finished with a single and drove in two runs.

Altamont's lone hit came from Goeckner with a single. The Indians will play for third place.

In game four, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City blanked St. Elmo/Brownstown, 13-0. No other information was provided.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg opened by downing Neoga, 10-0 in six innings in game five.

The Hatchets edged out to a 2-0 first inning lead, tacked on one in the third, five in the fourth and finished out with two in the sixth.

WSS had nine hits led by Ava Richards with two singles and three RBI, Karlie Bean with a single, double and an RBI, Hannah Hayes with a double and an RBI, Makenna Tabor with two singles and Gabby Vonderheide with a single and two RBI.

Bean was the winning pitcher going five innings, allowing no runs on two hits, one walk with nine strikeouts. Hannah Hayes came on to finish out the sixth allowing no runs on no hits and two walks.

Neoga had two hits, singles by Trista Moore and Abbi Hatton.

In game six, South Central pounded out 13 hits and defeated Dieterich 15-0 in three innings. The Cougars had an eight-run first, scored four in the second and three in the third.

Taegan Webster led the way in hitting for the winners with a single, double, home run and five RBI. Kayli Swift had a double and an RBI while Jaylyn Michel, Brooklyn Garrett and Jordan Geiler had two singles each. Garrett had three RBI, Michel two and Geiler one.

Halle Smith threw a three-hitter wih no walks and six strikeouts. Kaitlyn Boerngen, Eva Meinhart and Madilyn Brummer had a single each for the Maroons.

In the seventh contest, Windsor/Stew-Stras edged South Central 2-0.

The Hatchets tallied single runs in the first and fourth innings behind seven hits.

Maddy Pfeiffer had two singles to lead the way while Natalie Hayes had a double and an RBI and Bean had an RBI.

Bean picked up her second win on the mound for the day behind a three-hitter with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

Swift, T. Webster and Lily Malone had a single each for South Central.

The win sends Windsor/Stew-Stras into the championship game while South Central dropped into the third place contest.

In the eighth game of the day, Dieterich took a 2-0 first inning lead then broke loose with 10 runs in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 14-7 win over Neoga.

Cortney Brummer had a double, home run and four RBI for the winners while Jadyn Pruemer had a single, double and two RBI and M. Brummer a single, double and one RBI. Ruby Westendorf added a dobule adn an RBI and Breanna Shull two RBI.

Campbell led Neoga with a double and an RBI, Moore two singles and O'Dell a single and two RBI.

The tournament comes to a close Tuesday with the third place game at 3 p.m. featuring Altamont and South Central, the consolation championshp at 3 with CHBC and Dieterich and the championship at 4:45 p.m. with St. Anthony against Windsor/Stew-Stras.
