Bulldogs Capture Final Game of 2021 Softball City Series

The St. Anthony Bulldogs scored seven runs in the top of the first inning, then held on for a 12-8 victory over the Effingham Hearts in the final game of the 2021 Softball City Series. The game Friday afternoon at the EHS softball complex was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com. Effingham won the softball series two games to one.

With one out in the first inning, Addie Wernsing doubled, Haley Niebrugge singled, Lucy Fearday was hit by a pitch, and Sydney Kibler reached on a fielder's choice. Maddie Kibler then singled home a  run, Grace Karolewicz walked, and Anna Faber reached on an error. Cameron Rios then singled in a run and Wernsing singled home two more to cap the seven-run first.

St. Anthony then scored four more runs in the third on back-to-back walks, a single, and a walk to force in a run, and Rios then singled home a run and the Bulldogs had a 11-0 lead.

Effingham got a leadoff single and a stolen base from Grace Bushur and she was driven in on a ground ball by Emma Hardiek to make it 11-1 in the bottom of the first.

However, the Hearts were just getting started. Effingham scored six runs in the bottom of the third on a single and walk, a two-run double by Jaidi Davis, an RBI single by Jacy Boatman, a single, a walk, a two-run single by Riley Cunningham, and a RBI double by Abby Cunningham to pull within 11-7.

Effingham scored on a RBI double by Emma Hardiek to pull within 11-8 in the sixth. 

St. Anthony closed out the scoring with a run in the seventh on a single and stolen base by Rios, then Haley Niebrugge drove her in to make the final score 12-8.

Rios, Wernsing, Niebrugge, and Stacie Vonderheide each collected two hits for the Bulldogs, with Rios, Wernsing, and Lucy Fearday each driving in two runs, and Niebrugge, Maddie Kibler and Anna Faber each driving in a run.

Grace Bushur, Jaidi Davis, and Abby Cunningham each had two hits, while Emma Hardiek, Jacy Boatman, Taylor Armstrong and Riley Cunningham each had a base hit for the Hearts, while Davis, Hardiek and Riley Cunningham each drove in two runs, and Boatman and Abby Cunningham each drove in a run.

Lucy Fearday got the win for St. Anthony, going 6-1/3 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with one walk. Addie Wernsing got the other two outs while giving up six runs on five hits and two walks.

Taylor Armstrong took the loss for Effingham, allowing 10 of the St. Anthony runs on seven hits and five walks in two innings of work. Riley Cunningham came in and allowed just two runs on one hit and struck out a hitter in five innings of work.

With the Friday win, St. Anthony improved to 8-4, while Effingham is now 11-3 on the season.
