Hearts Win City Softball Series, Area Roundup

Effingham High School claimed the City Softball Series over Effingham St. Anthony with two victories Wednesday.

The Hearts opened by edging St. Anthony, 3-2. Jaidi Davis kept the Bulldogs off balance. She went six innings allowing one hit, two runs, four walks and striking out 11.

The Hearts broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth inning. With one out, Carsyn Fearday singled and stole second. Emma Hardiek reached on an error and Morgan Krouse followed with an RBI single. Davis hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI.

EHS then moved ahead 3-0 with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Fearday reached on a single and went to second on a wild pitch. Hardiek got on base a second time because of an error. A wild pitch brought Fearday home.

The Bulldogs came back with two runs in the top of the seventh as Liz Day drew a walk. Karlee Roepke was hit by a pitch and Sydney Gibson drew a walk to load the bases. Shea Kinkelaar was hit by a pitch bringing in a run. Grace Hakman then brought home another run with a single. But the Hearts ended the game without further damage.

Effingham then took the series with an 11-8 victory in the second contest.

The Hearts edged out with a run in the first then added on three in the second. EHS tallied one in the fifth for a 5-0 lead. St. Anthony came back to knot the score at 5-5 in the top of the sixth.

The Hearts didn't fold but pushed across six runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 11-5 lead. St. Anthony then scored three runs in the top of the third only to see the game end.

EHS had nine hits led by Emma Hardik with a single, double and three RBI, Davis with a single, double and an RBI and Skylar Schafer with a single and double. Grace Bushur had a double and drove in three runs. Lauryn Douthit had two singles and two RBI.

St. Anthony was led by A. Day with two singles, a home run and three RBI and Karlee Roepke with a home run and two RBI. Kinkelaar added two singles and an RBI.

This is the fifth straight year the Hearts have captured the series.

At Newton

Newton edged Lawrenceville 7-5 in action Wednesday.

The Eagles stepped out to a 2-0 first inning lead but trailed Lawrenceville 5-3 until the fifth when they tied the score. The Eagles then won the game with two in the bottom of the seventh.

Newton banged out 11 hits led by Amber Russell with a single, two doubles and four RBI and Kelsi Geltz with two singles and a double.

Kenzi Smith picked up the win on the mound going 5.1 innings allowing no runs on four hits, two walks and five strikeouts.

Woodlawn trounced Clay City/North Clay 22-4 in action Wednesday.

Malorie Craig had a single and double for CC/NC while Bre Farris had two singles and an RBI.

CC/NC drops to 2-12 on the season.
