WSS, South Central To Play For NTC Tourney Title, Newton Picks Up Win

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and South Central will be playing for the championship of the National Trail Conference Softball Tournament after picking up victories Wednesday.

WSS tallied an 8-2 win over Neoga. The Hatchets edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead then tallied four in the second, one in the third and finished with two in the sixth.

The Hatchets had eight hits led by Natalie Hayes with a single, double, triple and an RBI, Megan Schlechte with a single, triple and two RBI and Maddy Pfeiffer with a single, double and an RBI.

Neoga had three hits, all singles by Kelsey Partlow, Makenzie Saunders and L. Titus with a single each.

Karlie Bean and Calla Roney combined for the three hitter. Bean went four innings, allowing one run, one hit, one walk and struck out seven for the win. Roney came on and went three inings, allowing two hits, one run, no walks and striking out six.

South Central and Effingham St. Anthony stood tied at 1-1 until the third inning when the Bulldogs moved ahead 3-1. South Central came back to knot the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth. St. Anthony again moved ahead with a run in the fifth. But the Cougars won it with three runs in the seventh, 6-4.

South Central banged out 10 hits in the contest led by Halle Smith with three singles and an RBI, Angelica Rivera with a single and double and Laney Webster with a triple.

The Bulldogs had eight hits led by Katie Kabbes with a single, triple and an RBI, Allie Day with three singles and an RBI, Grace Hakman with a double and Jessica Coffin with two singles and an RBI.

Altamont advanced to the consolation championship with a 9-2 win over St. Elmo/Brownstown.

The Indians stepped out to a 2-0 first inning lead and never looked back. Altamont had nine hits led by Caitlyn White with a single, triple and two RBI, Taylor Mette with a single and double and Ellie McManaway and Bailey Teasley with a double each. McManaway added an RBI. Tinley Mette had a single and drove in two runs.

SEB was led by Cassidy Moss with three singles and Hailey Wright with a double and an RBI.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City captured a 5-3 win over Dieterich to advance to the consy title game.

CHBC took a 1-0 lead in the second, tacked on three in the third and produced one in the sixth. Dieterich's three runs came in the sixth.

Kylee Bertin had three singles for the winners while Madison Cherry had a double and drove in two runs and Lauren Wojcik had two singles and two RBI.

Dieterich had four hits, all singles by Kaitlyn Boerngen, Allie Poe, Jenny Robards and Molly Niemerg.

Windsor/Stew-Stras will take on South Central at 6:15 p.m. on the East Diamond at Evergreen Hollow Park for the championship Friday. Neoga and St. Anthony square off for third place at 4:15 p.m. on the East Diamond.

The consolation championship with Altamont and CHBC will take place at 4:15 p.m. on the West Diamond.

At Toledo

Cumberland pounded Martinsville 11-1 in action Wednesday.

The Pirates edged out to a 1-0 lead in the second then had a two-run third, a four-run fourth and a two-run sixth to end the game.

Madison Hendrix had a single, double, triple and an RBI for the Pirates while Zoe Mitchell had a single, double and three RBI.

Liberty Dunaway threw the three-hitter with no walks and nine strikeouts.

At Toledo

At Flora

Newton ran off to a 3-0 first inning lead and went on to end the game in the fourth inning, 15-0 over Flora Wednesday.

The Eagles had 15 hits and were aided by 12 Flora errors.

Kelsi Geltz had a single, home run and an RBI for the Eagles while Kenzi Smith had a single, home run and three RBI. Whitney Zumbahlen had a single, double and an RBI while Jacey Parr had a single and double. Ava Kessler and Josie Grunloh had a double each.

Smith picked up the pitching win going two innings, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out four.
