A seven-run fifth inning was the difference as Teutopolis defeated St. Anthony 8-2 in the 2019 Cross Creek Classic Friday. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

The game was impacted by the wet conditions from recent rains. The outfield at Evergreen Hollow Park was too damp, so that left the Shoes and the Bulldogs' home fields. A coin flip decided the site in favor of the Shoes so the contest was played at Teutopolis Community Park. The Shoes won the rolloff to home plate so got to be the home team.

Into the fourth inning, it appeared those two things would be the highlight of the night for Teutopolis.

St. Anthony's Allie Day pitched a perfect game until the fourth, when Alli Brumleve laced a double to left to account for the Shoes' first baserunner. Myah Funneman singled Brumleve home, but the Shoes still trailed 2-1.

Then came the fifth inning.

Leah Schmacher led off with a single to start the bottom of the inning and Lexie Niebrugge followed with a base hit. Savannah Gebben then squeezed home the tying run to make it 2-2. Holly Heuerman singled to give T-Town a 3-2 lead, and then Allie Niebrugge singled home two runs to make it 5-2. Brumleve singled and then Karsyn Mette singled to make it 6-2 and Myah Funneman doubled and Emma Deters sacrificed and reached on a fielder's choice and the Shoes held an 8-2 lead.

St. Anthony had taken a 2-0 lead in the third inning. With one out, Grace Hakman singled followed by three more base hits by Katie Kabbes, Jessica Coffin and Allie Day with Day's hit sending home both Hakman and Kabbes. A liner to short and a strikeout, though, ended the inning.

Brumleve got the win for Teutopolis, allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk while fanning seven. Allie Day took the loss, allowing the eight runs on nine hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
