St. A Wins Battle Of Softball Unbeatens

KINMUNDY -- Effingham St. Anthony and South Central came into this National Trail Conference softball meeting unbeaten. But the Bulldogs claimed the 11-9 win Wednesday evening to end that unbeaten string for the Cougars.

The Cougars took a 1-0 first inning lead and had a five-run second. St. Anthony came back with five runs in the top of the third but the Cougars tallied two more in the bottom of the frame to lead 8-5. St. Anthony then moved ahead with four runs in the fourth and led 11-8 going into the sixth. South Central tallied one more run and that was the game.

St. Anthony banged out 17 hits in the victory. Allie Day had four singles and drove in two runs while Katie Kabbes had two singles, a home run and an RBI, Liz Day a single, home run and four RBI. Grace Karolewicz had two singles, a triple and an RBI and Sydney Gibson added three singles and an RBI.

South Central had 13 hits led by Sydnee Garrett with a double, home run and four RBI, Kayli Swift with a single and double, Laney Webster with three singles and two RBI and Angelia Rivera with a solo homer. The Cougars drop to 0-1 in the NTC, 4-1 overall.

St. Anthony improves to 2-0 in the conference, 7-0 overall.

At Windsor

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg continues to roll along. The Hatchets edged Mounds Meridian, 6-5 in action Wednesday.

The Hatchets took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, tacked on a single run in the third, three in the fourth and led 6-0 going into the last inning. That's when Meridian attacked, scoring five runs and almost pulling out the game.

WSS had 11 hits led by Carson Cole with two singles, Calla Roney with a triple and an RBI, Mackenzi Tabbert with two singles and two RBI, Hannah Hayes with two singles and an RBI and Ava Bennett with two singles.

Roney picked up the pitching win, going 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs, two walks and striking out nine. Megan Schlechte came on for the save getting the final two outs.
