TEUTOPOLIS -- Two tough soccer squads clashed Monday as Teutopolis played host to Effingham and sent the Hearts home with a loss.

"it was a great game tonight," said T-town Coach Aaron Wendt.

The Shoes came away with the victory after winning the PK shootout 5-4. The score was 1-1 after regulation and the Shoes put away all five PKs to win.

The single goal was scored by Ethan Thoele, assisted by Gavin Tegeler. PKs were put away by Joe Niebrugge, Ethan Thoele, Gavin Buening, Gavin Tegeler and Noah Thompson.

"Noah Thompson played a great game and had six saves," said Coach Wendt.

Maicol Sefton scored the lone goal for the Hearts. Penalty kick scorers were Sefton, Camilo Aden, Edu Crespo and Sebastian Simoni. Xander Marler had four saves.

"It was a very tense and hard fought battle," said EHS Coach Logan Arney. "It felt like a classic cross country rivalry game where neither team wanted to give anything up. We worked hard and stayed in there the entire game.

"Maicol hit a screamer of a free kick for our goal. Unfortunately things didn't break our way in the penalty kick shootout but I'm proud of the spirit the team had."

T-town's varsity squad improved to 9-1 on the season while Effingham dropped to 10-2.

The Wooden Shoes junior varsity squad blanked Effingham 4-0. Goals were scored by Isaac McWhorter with two, Tyler Peterson and Joey Probst. The T-town JV squad is 5-0 on the season.

T-town is back in action at Centralia Thursday with a 4:15 p.m. varsity start.

The Hearts return to play today hosting Mahomet-Seymour at 5 p.m.
