Hearts Beat Bulldogs, Shoes, Eagles Win In Soccer

Effingham High School handed Effingham St. Anthony a 6-1 loss in soccer competition Tuesday.

"We won our game tonight, continuing our streak to start the season at 3-0," said EHS Coach Logan Arney. "The team had another strong performance to be proud of. In our first three games, we have had five different players score a goal."

Maicol Sefton, a sophomore, scored two goals and had one assist for the Hearts. Gage Kinder, a freshman, scored two goals. Sophomore Andrew Wagoner had a goal and two assists. Khye Stanfield, a freshman, scored a goal. Camilo Aden, a sophomore, had an assist and senior Xander Marler had one save.

"Our team played well," said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes. "We held Effingham's offense for 20 minutes, then injuries started to affect our players. We finished the first half 5-0.

"We had a better second half, scoring our first goal from afar by Maddox Wiedman, a junior, after conceding a goal.

"Our goalkeeper Pierce Verdeyen, a senior, had a great game with 24 saves. Mady Hodge, a sophomore, and Issac Fallert, a freshman, had great first games. Ronnen Bailey, a sophomore, had a great defensive game."

 

At Teutopolis

The Wooden Shoes captured an 8-1 varsity win for their home opener Tuesday evening over Charleston.

Gavin Tegeler, Joey Niebrugge and Ethan Thoele scored two goals each. Scoring one goal each were Evan Waldhoff and Josh Habing. Thoele and Tegeler had an assist each.

"We move to 2-1 on the season," said T-town Coach Aaron Wendt. "We travel to Mount Vernon Saturday for an 11 a.m. varsity game."

 

At Newton

Newton blanked Pana by a 4-0 count Tuesday.

The Eagles' Luke Weber scored three goals while Lance Volke had one goal assisted by Greyson Dow.

The Eagles will take on Belleville Althoff Catholic Thursday.
