EHS, Newton Nab Two Victories, T-town Splits at Red Gold Soccer Tourney

CHARLESTON -- Effingham and Newtonl claimed two victories each at the Charleston Red & Gold Soccer Tournament Saturday while Teutopolis split wins.

The tourney had been scheduled for three days but was cut down to two matches each Saturday due to the heat.

In Game 1, the Hearts defeated Danville 4-3 with a penalty kick shootout.

Maicol Sefton scored two goals in regulation. Sam Spicer had an assist. Brady Wilson had five saves including one save in the penalty kick shootout.

Scoring in the PK shootout were Sefton, Jake Niebrugge, Edu Crespo and Spicer.

In the second contest against Charleston, the Hearts again won in a penalty kick shootout, 5-4.

Sefton, Crespo and Gage Kinder had a goal each in regulation. Andrew Wagoner and Niebrugge had one assist each.

Scorers in the PK Shootout were Sefton Crespo, Kinder, Niebrugge and Wagoner.

Wilson had two saves including one save in the PK Shootout.

"Today was an exciting day starting our season off 2-0," said EHS Coach Logan Arney. "We had four different people score in regulation time with some exciting assists and team work. Freshman Brady Wilson stepped up in goal and made some incredible saves including two in the PK shootouts which led us to the victories.

"I'm proud of the team. If I called out all of the successes from today, I'd have to mention everyone."

Newton tallied a victory over Teutopolis, 5-3. Newton's  Greyson Dow scored a goal. T-town's Ethan Thoele scored a goal with an assist by Josh Habing and the score was tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation so went into a penalty kick shootout.

The Eagles converted four while the Shoes converted only two. Scoring for the Eagles were Luke Weber, Michael Neal, Nick Brody and Lance Volk.

Teutopolis went 1-1 on the day.

The Wooden Shoes then took a victory over Rantoul. Thoele scored on a PK and Evan Waldhoff scored. Goalkeeper Kolten Tabbert had his first clean sheet of the year.

The Shoes are 1-1 on the season and back to the pitch in their home opener against Charleston Tuesday.

Newton then tallied a 7-4 win over Mattoon. This game ended in a 3-3 tie and was decided with PK's. Regulation goals came from Weber, Volk and Greyson Dow.

The Eagles converted four PK's while the Green Wave only converted one.
