The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that transgender athletes can be allowed to compete on female school teams.

The ruling on a West Virginia case came in a brief unsigned order that suggests that the court is likely to address the issue more fully in the near future.

The state had sought to enforce a law prohibiting transgender athletes from school teams. The case was originally brought on behalf of a transgender girl, now 12, who wanted to try out for her school’s cross-country team.
