Mastery Becomes Fastest Harness Horse At Jasper County Fair

NEWTON -- Mastery paced a mile in 1:56.3 Sunday afternoon in the Illinois Topline Stakes at the Jasper County Fair, making him the fastest harness horse in the fair's 151-year history.

Owned by Lane and Wyatt Avenatti of Chrisman and trained by their father, Dave, Mastery led every step of the way and drew clear in the stretch to win by 10 lengths. Wyatt

Avenatti had the winning drive, as he broke the former track record of 1:57 set one year ago by Drivin Me Crazy. Ironically, Wyatt Avenatti was also the driver in last year's record mile. 

In other action, reigning Illinois Big Ten Colt Stakes champion Aqua's Bud won the Big Ten race for three-year-old trotters, cruising by nearly 40 lengths for trainer-driver Darla

Lohman of Effingham. Owned by Larry Longnecker of Sumner and Lacy Longnecker-Motch of Effingham, Aqua's Bud got the mile in 2:10.4. 

In the day's final race, trainer-driver Alan Finn of Greenup got the victory with Stylish Grace in 2:12.1, going wire-to-wire to cop a maiden trot by seven lengths. The winning, three-year-old filly is owned by Karen Lamkin and Joyce Gambrell of Indiana. 

Harness racing concludes today at the fair, with the first of 10 races scheduled to go to the post at 1 p.m. 

Gary Gorrell will serve as superintendent of speed for the program, with assistance from stakes and racing coordinator LeAnn Shinn.
