The Colorado Avalanche beat Nashville 5-3 Monday night to sweep the Predators 4-0 in the first round of the NHL playoffs and become the first team to advance to the second round.

They will play the winner of the St. Louis Blues-Minnesota Wild series, which is tied at 2-2.

Islanders Fire Coach Trotz

The New York Islanders fired head coach Barry Trotz Monday, the decision coming after the team missed the playoffs for the first time in Trotz’s four seasons with the team.
However president and general manager Lou Lamoriello said the decision “was not primarily made on this season,” stating that the team needs a “new voice.”
