A contingent of disc golfers from the Effingham area traveled to North Pekin over the weekend to compete in one of the largest events of the year.

The 9th Annual Illinois Amateur Championship, presented by Plastic Addicts and sponsored by Dynamic Discs, fielded 71 players in the Advanced Division.

The top score for the three rounds...two 18-hole rounds on Saturday and a 27-hole round on Sunday...posted by an area player was turned in by Mark Jones, who finished 11th overall at +4. There were only eight sub-par finishes for the weekend. Yes, the wind was just as brutal in North Pekin as in our area. After a 74 in the first round on the tough Northwoods Black course, Jones rebounded with a 57 in the second round Saturday on the Kennel Lake course, then posted a 95 for the Sunday marathon back at Northwoods for a 226 total.

Joseph Garland finished 13th for the weekend, one shot back at 227. After a 71 at Northwoods Black, Garland carded a 65 at Kennel Lake, then turned in a 91 on Sunday.

Cole Mintert finished 28th at 239, with rounds of 71 and 64 on Saturday, then 104 on Sunday.

In the Recreational Division, which utilized different layouts, Ben Keller tied for 15th with rounds of 62 and 59 on Saturday, then a 90 on Sunday.

Tim "Big Country" Dunahee tied for 34th with rounds of 64 and 67 on Saturday, then a 90 on Sunday.

In the Recreational Women Division, Samantha Landers was the winner with a 245 total, including rounds of 64 and 74 on Saturday and 107 on Sunday.

In the Novice Division, Bradley Livingston finished 39th with a 253 total, including rounds of 67 and 82 on Saturday and 104 on Sunday.
