Effingham disc golfers Mark Jones and Joseph Garland traveled to Morton this past weekend to compete in the Northwood Open.

Jones played both Saturday and Sunday in the event, while Garland took part in the Sunday competition.

Jones finished in a tie for fifth place in the Saturday event, going -6, including -5 in the second round of the day. He was tied for ninth after the first round, but posted a 1021 rated round to move up to a top five finish, playing in the Open Division.

On Sunday, both local golfers struggled in their first round, but played much better in the second go. Garland shot a 63 in the first round, one shot behind Jones, who had a 62.

The second round was a different story.

Garland, after four birdies as opposed to six bogeys and a double bogey in the first round, turned it around in a big way in his second round, with seven birdies against just two bogeys and a 992 rated round.

Jones, who had four bogeys and a double bogey as opposed to three birdies in the first round, had six birdies in the second round against four bogeys and a double bogey.
