Teutopolis school board members Monday got a further report from Superintendent Matt Sturgeon on whether to start a football program.

The biggest concern was the proposed cost; up to two million dollars according to conversations Sturgeon had with officials who have started programs in the last 20 years that are of similar size to Teutopolis.

Board President Brad Koester said that amount couldn't be a district-driven initiative, but would have to come from the community.

Sturgeon said his contacts recommended a five-year startup process; staffing and facilities the first two years, a freshman team the third year, adding a JV team the fourth year, and adding a varsity team the fifth year.

Speaking as a former football coach, board member Michael Ritchie is against the idea. Ritchie said the cost, the possibility of injuries, and other factors left him against the idea.

Board member Troy Ozenkoski said he's been in favor of the idea, "but not for a million and a half or two million dollars".

Other recommendations included being part of a conference or else get ready for long trips, and consideration of adding marching band and fall cheerleaders.

There was also discussion of softball improvements. Options included adding a press box and other amenities at the village park field, building a field east of the student parking lot at the high school, or checking with the Knights of Columbus about utilizing their field since they have most of the amenities already in place.

Also discussed was additional expense for weights for the weight room, and new or more bleachers for the track.

The other item raised was something permanent to honor late Lady Shoes basketball coach Dennis Koester. Superintendent Matt Sturgeon said this year will mark 15 years since Koester's death. He suggested he and Athletic Director Laurie Thompson talk with the Koester family and with the Teutopolis Sportsbackers as to ideas for what could be developed.
