Since becoming an independent in high school sports, Teutopolis has been traveling over a large part of the state for athletic contests.

That had to change for the coming school year, what with restrictions due to COVID-19 on how far schools can travel.

That left Teutopolis Athletic Director Laurie Thompson with a dilemma. A solution has been reached, as Teutopolis has been accepted for the coming school year as a member of the Apollo Conference.

The decision does not include football.

By vote of the Apollo Conference schools, Teutopolis has been included into the conference for all other sports they host.

The move becomes effective immediately, and will also ease scheduling difficulties for the conference.

Teutopolis will join current members of the conference that include Charleston, Effingham, Lincoln, Mahomet-Seymour, Mattoon, Mt. Zion and Taylorville. Again, the application was for all sports except for football.

Taylorville Principal Matt Hutchison, the President of the Apollo Conference, wrote the Teutopolis administration to let them know their application was accepted and said, "We look forward to the competition and sportsmanship that Teutopolis will bring to the conference."

For her part, Teutopolis Athletic Director Laurie Thompson said, "Due to the COVID-19/IHSA restrictions, our independent schedule was extremely limited in the number of games and opponents. Teutopolis Unit 50 thanks the Apollo Conference for allowing our athletes in every sport the opportunity to play full schedules. Thank you from the Wooden Shoes!"
