The Effingham Hearts have reached the Class 4A high school football playoffs.

The Hearts will head to Mt. Zion for first round action. Effingham just defeated the Braves two weeks ago by a 21-14 score. Mt. Zion finished the season at 7-2, while the Hearts finished 5-4.

We will let you know when the game will be played as soon as arrangements are finalized.

Five of the six Apollo Conference football schools made the playoffs. Mahomet-Seymour will host Troy Triad in the 5A playoffs, while in the 4A playoffs, Taylorville will play at Murphysboro, and Charleston will host Freeburg, in addition to the Effingham at Mt. Zion game.

Also in Class 4A, Lincoln made the playoffs following their return to the Central States Eight, with the dubious honor of playing at Rochester. Also in 4A, Cahokia plays at Breese Central.

Other matchups of note: In Class 1A, Cumberland goes to Casey-Westfield in a battle of legendary foes.

Class 2A matchups include Pana at Nashville, Trenton Wesclin at Shelbyville, Vandalia at Lawrenceville, and Breese Mater Dei at Carmi-White County.

Class 3A battles will include Benton at Mt. Carmel, Clinton at Sullivan, Fairfield at Greenville, and Paris at Roxana.
