Newton Beats Richland County in Football

Newton came back in the fourth quarter to hand Richland County a 28-20 loss in high school football action Friday.

The Eagles took a 14-6 opening quarter lead as Max Meinhart handed off to Meyer Tarr who went in from the 14 yard line. The extra point was missed.

Richland County came back with a 23 yard run by Runyon and the score was tied at 6-6.

Newton then moved ahead as Meinhart dropped back to the four and threw a pass completion. Evan Zumbahlen ran the ball from the 45 and carried the ball to the end zone, a 93 yard gain. Meinhart then dropped back and thew a pass completion to Gus Bierman who went in for the two point conversion and the Eagles led 14-6.

Newton tallied a third touchdown in the second quarter. Meinhart handed off to Meyer Tarr who went in from the seven yard line. The point after failed but the Eagles led 20-6 at halftime.

Richland County came back with a touchdown in the third quarter and the two point conversion was good to pull within 20-14.

The Tigers then tied the score at 20-20 in the fourth quarter. The touchdown was from the nine yard line. The point after attempt was halted by Gus Bierman and Cole Elmore who tackled the Olney runner before the end zone.

Newton then broke the tie as Tarr ran the ball from the seven yard line into the end zone. Meinhart then connected with Bierman for the two point conversion.

The Eagles' Meinhart connected on six of 13 passes for 132 yards. Evan Zumbahlen caught one pass for 93 yards while Cole Phillips had one for 13 and Tarr one for 10.

Defensively, Landen McClure had three solo tackles and nine assists, Tarr four solo tackles and two assists and Bierman one solo and eight assists.

Tarr ran the ball 19 times for 120 yards while Drake Wolf had 10 carries for 59 yards.
