Newton Falls To Olney, Cumberland Wins

OLNEY -- Newton High School fell to Olney Friday evening, 28-21 in Little Illini Conference football action.

The Tigers took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Newton tied the score at 7-7 at halftime with a touchdown.

Olney came back to score two touchdowns in the third quarter for a 21-7 lead. Newton tallied two touchdowns in the final period but the Tigers scored a final touchdown for the victory.

Newton's scores came from Dominik Utley and Meyer Tarr with a rushing touchdown each and a touchdown pass from Max Meinhart to Trevor Haarman.

The Eagles were led defensively by Austin Moore with five solo tackles and three assists, Tarr with six solo tackles and five assists and Gus Bierman and Braxton Griffith with one solo tackle and six assists each.

Newton will finish out regular season play Friday hosting Paris in an LIC contest.

 

At Argenta

Cumberland will be a member of the playoff field with a 6-2 overall mark with one game remaining.

The Pirates defeated Argenta-Oreana 45-6 in a rare Saturday contest to improve to 6-0 in the Lincoln Prairie Conference and 6-2 overall.

Cumberland opened the season with the two losses to non-conference opponents before winning six straight.

The Pirates will finish out the season hosting Arcola Friday in LPC play.
