New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman wrote an open letter to Miami Heat forward Meyers Leonard Wednesday, after Leonard used an anti-semitic slur while playing a livestreamed video game.

Leonard apologized, saying he hadn’t known what the word meant, and the Heat said he’d be away from the team indefinitely.

Edelman, who is Jewish, wrote, “I get the sense you didn’t use that word out of hate, more out of ignorance. . . . That’s what makes it so destructive. . . . Casual ignorance is harder to combat and has greater reach . .  .” He ended by inviting Leonard to a Shabbat dinner.
