EHS Girls Win Multi-Team Meet at Mattoon; EHS Boys Place Runner in Top 5; Junior High Meet Results

(THE EFFINGHAM HEARTS GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE BROADWAY BOLT MEET IN MATTOON WEDNESDAY)

Effingham High School won the Girls Division of the Broadway Bolt Cross Country Meet in Mattoon Wednesday with a total time of 1:41:25.9.

The rest of the field, in order of finish: Robinson, Marshall, St. Anthony, Mattoon, Charleston, Newton, Rantoul, Dieterich, and Teutopolis. North Clay had three runners compete.

The Hearts' Jessica Larsen continued her great campaign, winning the girls meet in 19:18.9. Overall, it was a big day for Effingham, as Baylee Summers was 4th in 19:46.9, Audrey Wagoner was 5th in 19:50.4, Morgan Springer was 9th in 20:38.1, and Haddie Hill was 17th in 21:51.3. Also for Effingham: Drew Weis 22:01.3; Kyra Hazelton 22:15.1; Laney Myers 22:36.7; Lauren Ethridge 27:45.7; and Gracie Eaton 29:40.7

As far as other local schools and their scores:

ST. ANTHONY--Aubrey Denning was sixth in 20:07.1, Stacie Vonderheide was seventh in 20:09.2; and Emma Helmink was 10th in 20:54.4. Also for the Bulldogs: Grace Niebrugge 42nd in 24:24.4, Ava Faber was 50th in 26:07.2, and Gracie Slifer was 52nd in 26:19.3. 

NEWTON--Layna Marshall was third in 19:39.2. Also for the Eagles: Shay Bennett was 32nd in 23:06.9; Lily Yager was 41st in 24:12.9; Avery Mulvey was 43rd in 24.27.9; and Katherine Bierman was 48th in 25:32.6. 

DIETERICH--Lena Goebel was 26th in 22:31.8; Marli Michl was 39th in 24.07.9; Ella Kreke was 40th in 24:11.1; Addison Miller was 47th in 24:54.6; and Callie Faller was 56th in 26.57.4.  Also for Dieterich: Makenna French 59th in 28:49.8; Adriane Huber 62nd in 30:43.8; and Frances Verdeyen 33:15.7. 

TEUTOPOLIS--Pearl Huber 30th in 23:02.0; Mary Jane Dennis 31st in 23:05.5; Elaina Gaffin 51st in 26:11.9; Ella Neihls 55th in 26:56.3; Claire Overbeck 57th in 28:15.5; and Maddie Zane 58th in 28:47.6

NORTH CLAY--Brooke Koelm 21:45.9; Maddie Ayers 27:40.7; Samantha Westendorf 29:10.2

Newton won the boys meet with a total time of 1:28:05.6. The rest of the order of finish: Charleston 2nd, St. Anthony 3rd, Robinson 4th, Effingham 5th, Rantoul 6th, Decatur Eisenhower 7th, Dieterich 8th, North Clay 9th, Marshall 10th, Teutopolis 11th and Mattoon 12th. Lawrenceville and Tri-County also had runners, but not full teams.

Ballard Nature Center was the scene of a five-team junior high cross country meet hosted by Altamont Lutheran Interparish School Wednesday.

St. Anthony won the boys meet. The results: St. Anthony 17, Teutopolis 51, ALIS 82, and Stewardson Trinity Lutheran 86. 

Camden Bloemer and Connor Storm of St. Anthony finished one-two; Bloemer in 11:07 and Storm in 11:47. Here's the rest of the St. Anthony finishes: Charlie Bierman 4th in 11:53; Bleke Verdeyen 6th in 12:29; Mike Fearday 7th in 12:34; Max Schuette 9th in 12;37; Grayson Bloemer 10th in 12:43; Mason Storm 13th in 13:04; Braxton Schultz 14th in 13:08; Reed Schumacher 17th in 13:26; Graham Miller 24th in 14:13; Marty Scheidemantel 32nd in 14:50; Jackson Settle 33rd in 14:53; Ben Sudkamp 40th in 15:15; and Jacob Thoele 50th in 16:01.

In the girls meet, Trinity Lutheran was the winner. The order of finish: Trinity Lutheran 29, Teutopolis 39, Mattoon St. John 58.

St. Anthony did not have enough girls to field a team, but had great individual finishes. Nora Niebrugge won the meet in 12:52 and Bella Schultz finished second in 12:59. Also, Hannah Frisbie seventh in 14:27 and Amelia Janis eighth in 14.32.
