Marshall Wins LIC Tourney Title, Altamont Nabs Regular Season Contest, Highland Tourney

FLORA -- Marshall High School captured the championship of the Little Illini Conference Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday evening at Flora High School.

Marshall claimed a 37-25 win over host Flora. The two squads went head-to-head and were tied at 8-8 after the opening quarter. Marshall held a one-point lead at halftime then had a 16-8 third quarter run.

Thompson tallied 13 for the winners while Keim added 10.

In the third place contest, Olney downed Newton 61-51. The Tigers held a 30-19 halftime lead then held off a final quarter rally by the Eagles.

Miller and Shipman provided the one-two scoring punch for Olney with 28 and 20 points respectively. Newton was led by Richards with 19 and Cartright with 18. The Eagles drop to 9-11.

There was no score reported for the consolation championship featuring Palestine/Hutsonville against Lawrenceville.

At Altamont

In regular season play, Altamont trounced South Central 40-15 and celebrated Senior Night. The Indians took a 19-9 first half lead then had a 21-6 second half run.

M. Ohnesorge tallied 16 for the winners while L. Ohnesorge chipped in with nine. South Sentral was led by Hahn with five.

At Highland

Three games were contested in the Highland Tournament Thursday evening. In consolation bracket action, Nokomis defeated Belleville Althoff 46-37 and O'Fallon won over Okawville 49-37.

In winner bracket play, Breese Central downed Breese Mater Dei 52-32 to move into the championship game.

Tonight's games features Salem against Nashville at 5 p.m. and Highland taking on Carlyle at 6:30 in consolation bracket action. In the winner bracket, Teutopolis squares off against Belleville West. If the Wooden Shoes win, they will play Breese Central Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for the championship. If the Wooden Shoes lose, they will face Breese Mater Dei for third place at 1 p.m.

The consolation championship will be at 10 a.m. against Nokomis and O'Fallon. The fifth place game will feature tonight's winners at 11:30 a.m.
