Fighting back from seven-point and six-point fourth quarter deficits, the Effingham Hearts edged the St. Anthony Bulldogs 45-43 in action Friday night at the St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament. The game was heard on 979XFM and online via our live streaming.

(EFFINGHAM'S LEIGHTON LARK HAS BEEN THE TEAM'S LEADING SCORER THROUGHOUT THE ST. ANTHONY THANKSGIVING TOURNAMENT)

The Bulldogs' Neil Williams was a key cog in the wheel in the final period, scoring nine of his 11 points in the period while battling a swarming Effingham defense.  The Hearts, though, finally were able to cash in on some defensive miscues by the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter to post the win.

It was close throughout the contest.  Effingham led 8-6 after one quarter, St. Anthony was up 18-16 at halftime and the game was tied at 24-24 after three quarters.  Neither team had bigger than a four-point lead until St. Anthony finally pulled ahead by seven with less than 3:00 remaining. Effingham hit a three-point basket to pull back within four, but St. Anthony scored to move back ahead by six before Effingham hit another three-pointer and then scored off a couple of steals to post the two-point win.

St. Anthony in the first half was able to keep Effingham off the boards almost entirely.  The Hearts finally got a rebound from Braydon Bone close to halftime for their only board of the half to 14 for the Bulldogs.  Turnovers were something the Bulldogs battled throughout the game, committing 13 in the first half to six for Effingham to prevent any thoughts of building a larger lead.  After intermission, Effingham outboarded St. Anthony 14-12 and committed just four turnovers to 10 for St. Anthony.

St. Anthony had a good night shooting the ball, hitting on 19 of 32 shots for 59%.  They made two of three three-point tries.  The Bulldogs struggled at the line, though, making just three of 10 attempts.  Effingham made 19 of 47 shots for 40% but was just four of 15 from three-point range.  The Hearts also had problems at the charity stripe, making just three of seven attempts.

Leighton Lark led Effingham with 11 points, making five of 10 shots.  Also for the Hearts: Kevin Daugherty and Isaac Foreman seven each, Kennan Mahaffey and Marcus Robinson six apiece, and Matt Wohltman and Braydon Bone four each.

Neil Williams and Alex Hoelscher scored 11 points apiece to pace St. Anthony.  Also for the Bulldogs: John Goeckner seven, Andrew Gardewine six, and Derek Rios, Matt Gibson, Zach Gardewine and Frank Jansen two each.

The win pushes Effingham's tournament and season record to 2-1 while St. Anthony is 1-2 for the tournament and the season.  Both teams will play on Saturday and we'll have both of their games on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

Here's the Saturday lineup at the Enlow Center: 3pm--Charleston vs. Robinson...4:30pm--St. Anthony vs. Mt. Zion...6pm--Effingham vs. Breese Central...7:30pm--Belleville Althoff vs. Mattoon.

In a scary moment in Friday's game, Effingham cheerleader Morgan Papa was injured in a fall during a routine.  She was taken for examination and was then released.  Other than some swelling from hitting the floor, she is doing alright.
