Effingham, Teutopolis, Jasper County and Newton St. Thomas advanced to championship games in the eighth-grade boys basketball regionals Tuesday evening.

Class 8-4A Effingham Regional

The Mustangs easily handled Taylorville by a 44-28 score at their own regional.

Effingham ran out to a 20-6 opening quarter lead as Jenner Pals scored eight points and Ian Kinkelaar seven. Kinkelaar scored all five of the Mustangs points in the second quarter as the team led 25-11 at halftime.

Effingham had a 9-8 edge in the third quarter as Kinkelaar scored five and a 10-9 final quarter.

Kinkelaar tallied 20 points on six field goals, three from trifecta land, and five of six at the line. Pals also finished in double digits with 10.

In the first game of the evening, Rochester was a 55-28 winner over Mount Zion.

Effingham will now face Rochester at 6 p.m. today for the regional championship.

Class 8-3A Teutopolis Regional

Teutopolis handled Lawrenceville to the tune of 55-32 in its own Class 3A Regional Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes whipped out to a 29-6 opening quarter lead and led 39-14 halftime lead.

Lawrenceville came back with an 18-16 second half but couldn't overcome that opening half run by the Shoes.

Eric Weidner led the way with 17 points while Jake Probst added 10 for the Shoes.

In the second game of the evening, Jasper County was a 40-33 winner over Shelbyville.

Jasper County edged out to an 8-4 opening quarter lead and led 21-18 at halftime. Jasper County then had a 19-15 second half.

Eli Wolf was the lone Jasper County player in double figures with 23. Ian Kessler was the top defender and Mack Huber the top rebounder.

Jasper County improved to 19-4 on the season.

Teutopolis and Jasper County now meet for the regional championshp at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Class 8-1A Effingham Sacred Heart Regional

Newton St. Thomas advanced to the championship game of the Sacred Heart Regional.Tuesday.

St. Thomas was a 34-12 winner over Neoga.

In the opening game, Mattoon St. John's defeated Effingham Sacred Heart 52-31.

St. Thomas and Mattoon St. John's will now meet at 6 p.m. today for the championship.

 

Other Regionals Tonight:

The Class 8-2A St. Elmo/Brownstown Regional is back in action tonight.

South Central takes on Assumption Central A&M at 6 p.m. followed by Effingham St. Anthony and Stewardson-Strasburg meeting at 7:15 p.m.

The winners will square off at 6:30 p.m. Thursday for the championship.

The Class 8-2A Dieterich Regional continues tonight with two games.

Dieterich will face North Clay (Louisville) at 6 p.m. followed by Paris Crestwood taking on Red Hill (Bridgeport) at 7:15.

The winners advance to the championship game Thursday at 6 p.m.
