EJHS, St. A Win At James Burke Tournament; CHBC, St. Michael Nab Wins At NTC Tourney

GREENVILLE -- Effingham and Effingham St. Anthony picked up victories at the 75th Annual James Burke Memorial Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Monday.

Effingham didn't fool around in this one, taking a 22-4 opening quarter lead on Hillsboro and ending with a 61-27 win.

The Mustangs were led by Jenner Pals with 13 of his team's opening quarter points.

Effingham held a 36-16 halftime lead and led 53-25 going into the final quarter. Ian Kinkelaar tallied eight points in the second period while Carson Fox had eight in the third quarter.

Pals led the way with 19 points on nine field goals and one free throw. Also in double figures were Fox with 13 and Kinkelaar with 12.

The Mustangs now face Greenville, a 31-14 winner over Aviston, at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The second game Thursday will feature Salem against Staunton at 7 p.m.

In the second game, Greenville won over Aviston 31-24. Triad defeated Salem, no score listed

St. Anthony then handed Staunton a 40-30 loss.

The Bullpups trailed Staunton 10-4 after the opening quarter and 18-16 at halftime. The two teams were tied at 22-22 at the end of the third quarter.

St. Anthony then came roaring back with an 18-8 final period for the victory.

Cooper Sehy led the way in that final quarter, connecting on four three-pointers and a regular basket for 14 of his team's 18 points. He finished with 16 for the game.

St. Anthony now faces Triad, a winner over Salem, at 7 p.m. Thursday.

At St. Elmo

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City claimed the the first game of the evening at the Eighth-Grade NationalTrail Conference Tournament Monday evening.

Effingham Sacred Heart took a 15-7 opening quarter lead but CHBC came back with a 17-5 second period to tie the score at 22-22 at halftime.

CHBC then had a 27-21 second half for the win.

Four players finished in double figures for the Bobcats. Vaughn led the way with 15 points while Rauch and Wells added 11 each and Calame scored 10.

Sacred Heart was led by Gabe Traub and Owen Schuette with 10 points each.

In the other contest, Sigel  St. Michael downed South Central, 21-12.

CHBC and St. Michael will now meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday for the consolation championship.

The tournament continues tonight as Dieterich takes on North Clay (Louisville) at 6:15 p.m. and Stewardson-Strasburg faces Neoga at 7:30.
