Newton opened the day Friday at the Effingham/Tetuiopolis Boys Basketball Christmas Classic with a 75-67 win over Belvidere.

The Eagles edged out to a 17-15 opening quarter lead then led 37-25 at halftime.

Caden Nichols led the way for Newton with 27 points on nine field goals, six from three-point range, and three free throws. Parker Wolf added 22 and Dylan Bierman 13.

Chicago Brooks won over Seneca, 51-45 while Pleasant Plains downed Charleston, 54-42.

Mattoon then claimed a 66-53 win over Effingham. The Green Wave held a 26-22 halftime lead then had a 22-16 third period run.

Hayden Wendling led Mattoon with 20 points while Cannon Bockhorn added 12 and KJ Kellams 11.

Effingham was led by Hayden Wendling with 20 points on five field goals, one a three-pointer, and five free throws. Also in double figures were Cannon Bockhorn with 12 and KJ Kellams with 11.

Lincoln Way East beat Highland, 50-41 and Lutheran North won over Oak Lawn 45-39.

Dixon then claimed a 67-65 win over Teutopolis in three overtimes.

Dixon held a 40-32 lead going into the final quarter. The Wooden Shoes rallied with a 19-11 run to tie the score at 51-51. In the first overtime session, both teams scored seven points and in the second OT the teams had four points each. Dixon pulled out the win in the third overtime with a 5-3 score.

Garrett Gaddis led the way for the Wooden Shoes with 28 on 10 field goals, three from three-point land, and five of seven at the line. Joey Niebrugge ended with 14 points.

Champaign Centennial handed Effingham St. Anthony a 67-50 loss.

Centennial took a 33-16 halftime lead and never looked back.

The Bulldogs had two players in double figures. Brock Fearday led the way with 16 points on seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and one of two at the line. Collin Westendorf chipped in with 13.

Newton was a 53-29 winner over Pleasant Plains. The Eagles edged out to a 7-6 first quarter lead and led 24-7 at halftime. The Eagles then had a 29-23 second half.

The Eagles were led by Gier with 17 points on eight field goals and one of two at the line. Nichols added 10.

Mattoon won over Chicago Brooks, 42-32 while Charleston beat Belvidere, 66-59. 

Highland edged Teutopolis 55-45. Highland stepped out to a 19-11 opening quarter lead and led 29-25 at halftime. Highland kept the momentum with a 13-6 third period.

Teutopolis had two players in double figures. Joey Niebrugge led the way with 15 points on seven field goals and a free throw. Alex Kremer added 11.

Seneca then won over Effingham 64-45. The score was knotted at 26-26 at halftime. Seneca then went on a 21-12 third quarter run and finished strong with a 17-7 final period.

Hayden Wendling led Effingham with 14 points on six field goals, two from three point range.

St. Anthony then defeated Oak Lawn, 62-49. The Bulldogs edged out to a 16-15 opening quarter lead then had a 17-8 second period run and outscored Oak Lawn 29-26 in the second half.

Collin Westendorf and B. Fearday led the way for the Bulldogs with 21 points each. Westendorf had six field goals and nine of 10 at the line while Fearday was seven field goals, four from three-point range and three of four at the line. Ryan Schmidt added 15 points.

Lincoln Way East defeated Dxon 58-41 and Champaign Centennial finished out the games for the day with a 69-45 win over Lutheran North.
