EHS, Altamont, C'land, Newton Nab Girls Basketball Victories

CHARLESTON -- Effingham High School ran out to a 12-4 opening quarter lead and went on to bounce Charleston by a 61-21 tally in Apollo Conference girls basketball action Monday evening.

The Hearts ran out to a 12-4 opening quarter lead as Saige Althoff connected on two baskets and a free throw for five points while Olivia Moser added three.

The Trojans then came back with an 11-6 second period to pull within 18-15 at halftime. The Hearts only hit two baskets in the quarter and two free throws. Unfortunately for the Hearts, they failed to connect on eight free throws.

Meanwhile, the Trojans had five players hit a basket each.

But after halftime, the Hearts went on a roll. After only the two baskets in the second period and two free throws, the Hearts nailed eight baskets and were eight of 10 at the line. Bella Austin scored a three-pointer and was two of two at the line for five points while Althoff added a basket and two free throws and Sidney Donaldson two baskets. Alyssa Martin added a bucket and a free throw.

Bria Beals, who had four points after three quarters, took over the scoring duties in the final period. She hit four baskets that included a three-pointer for nine of the team's 18 points. Austin added five more points to her total and Averie Wolfe connected on a three-poitner as the Hearts had an 18-0 final period run.

Beals, Althoff and Austin scored in double figures for EHS. Beals and Atlhoff scored 13 points each. Beals hit six field goals, one from three-point range, while Althoff put in five baskets and was three of five at the line. Austin hit three field goals, one a three-pointer and was two of four at the line.

Donaldson chipped in with nine and Olivia Moser added eight.

Effingham also captured the junior varsity game, 57-17. The Hearts had four players in double figures. Tessa Raddatz and Kristen Armstrong tallied 11 each while MacKenzie Love and Mya Harvey added 10 each.

At Louisville

North Clay (Louisville) took a 41-33 halftime lead but Altamont came back with a 45-32 second half for a 78-73 National Trail Conference victory Monday evening.

The Cardinals went on a three-point scoring binge in the opening quarter as Alexis VanDyke and Matia Price nailed two each and Miah Ballard tallied nine points on four baskets and a free throw.

The Cardinals continued their run with a 20-15 second period. Price hit three trifectas and a regular basket for 11 points while Ballard added seven more points.

The Indians kept within striking range as Peyton Osteen hit two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight in the opening quarter while Grace Nelson scored six. Nelson then taliled eight in the second period.

Altamont came out to halt the scornig flow from the Cardinals and went on a 19-7 run to pull ahead 52-48 after the third period. Nelson hit five regular baskets and a three-pointer for 13 of the 19 points.

She continued on with five baskets and six of nine free throws for 16 of the team's 26 points and the Indians claimed the five-point victory.

Nelson finished with 43 on 15 baskets that included two three-pointers and was 11 of 15 at the line. P. Osteen finished with 13 points on five field goals, two of those three-pointers and one of three at the line.

North Clay was led by Ballard with 35 points on 14 field goals, two three-pointers, and five of six at the line. Price finished with 23 points on eight field goals, five of those three-pointers, and two of five at the line.

The Cardinals dropped to 0-4 in the conference, 4-7 overall.

At Okaw Valley

Cumberland edged Okaw Valley, 37-33 in overtime Monday evening.

The Pirates trailed Okaw Valley 9-4 after the opening quarter but came back with a 9-3 second period to lead 13-12 at halftime. Jade Carr connected on five points in the second quarter.

Okaw Valley then had a 5-4 third period to move ahead 18-17.

Cumberland came back with an 11-10 final quarter as Alysa Dittamore hit two baskets and two free throws for six points and Hannah Shoemaker three points. That sent the game into overtime.

In the overtime session, Katelyn Shoemaker connected on a basket and two free throws while Dittamore added two buckets and Jadalyn Sowers a free throw as the Pirates pulled out the victory.

K. Shoemaker finished with 13 points to lead Cumberland while Dittamore added 12 and Carr 11. K. Shoemaker hit four field goals and five free throws.

At Salem

Salem stepped out to an 18-15 opening quarter lead but Newton came back with a 17-7 second period run and went on for a 53-36 victory Monday evening.

Three players hit double digits for the Eagles. Camryn Martin led the way with 18 points on eight field goals, one a three-poitner and one of two at the line. Lilly Kessler and Karasyn Martin added 12 each.

Kessler led the way in rebounding with 14. Elley  Bennett led in assists with seven. K. Martin and Camryn Martin added five steals each.

Newton imprvoe dto 4-1 on the season and will be back in action Thursday at Teutopolis.

Newton also nabbed the junior varsity game, 22-17. Allie Hermann led the way for the Eagles with 12 poitns. The Eagles JV remained undefeated with a 7-0 record.

At Salem

At Woodlawn

Woodlawn played host to South Central and picked up a 65-41 non-conference victory Monday evening.

Woodlawn edged ahead 13-9 as Jase Burkett nailed three trifectas and a free throw for 10 points.

South Central's Taegan Webster connected on a regular basket and a three-pointer in the period.

Woodlawn led 34-23 at halftime and had a 13-7 third period run.

Webster was the lone South Central playr in double digures with 12 on five field goals, one a three-pointer and one of one at the line. Lauren Johnson added eight poitns.
