South Central, N. Clay Win, EHS Drops Contest In Saturday Boys Games

FARINA -- South Central tallied a 49-35 victory over Ramsey in a boys basketball contest Saturday.

The Cougars edged out to a 9-3 opening quarter lead as Jacob Smith hit a basket and was two of two at the line for four points.

South Central held a 16-11 halftime lead as Westin Neilson knocked in a three-pointer in the second quarter.

The Cougars then put the contest away with an 18-12 third quarter and finished strong from the free throw line.

South Central hit 22 of 29 free throws led by Max Magnus with three field goals and 11 of 11 at the line for 17 points. Smith finished with four of five at the line.

Ramsey was led by Hayes with 11 and Finley with 10.

At Farina

At Wayne City

The 69th Annual Wayne City Holiday Tournament got underway Saturday with four games.

In the opener, Cisne edged Linton-Stockton, Ind., 67-64.

North Clay (Louisville) was a 72-43 winner over Sandoval. The Cardinals are now 2-5 on the season. North Clay will return to action in the tourney Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Webber Township (Bluford).

Wayne City edged Thompsonville, 57-56.

Lovejoy was a 70-30 winner over Wayne City Junior Varsity.

The tournament continues tonight as Linton-Stockton, Ind. meets Edwards County (Albion) at 5:30, Thompsonville takes on Grayville at 7 and Sandoval meets Webber Township at 8:30.

 

At Mount Vernon

Effingham ran into Mount Vernon and fell to the homestanding Rams by a 75-21 count in Saturday competition.

Mount Vernon ran out to a 22-8 opening quarter lead as Navantae Nesbit Jr. scored 10 points for the Rams.

The lead went to 40-16 at halftime.

"In our best year at Effingham, these guys from Mount Vernon would have been tough to comepte with," said EHS Coach Obie Farmer. "The physicality and athleticism was hard to compete with on Saturday.

"The kids battled the entire game and never folded."

EHS was led by KJ Kellams with eight points.
