Neoga, EHS, Newton Nab Girls H.S. Basketball Wins

NEOGA -- Neoga trailed Cumberland 28-24 at halftime then went on 21-point third quarter run and finished out with a 60-47 girls high school basketball win Friday.

The Pirates edged ahead 13-12 in the opening quarter as Suzy Fritts connected on five points while Jade Carr hit a three-pointer and a regular basket for five and Paige Dittamore knocked in a three-pointer.

Cumberland kept the pressure on with a 15-12 second period as Katelyn Shoemaker took over with five points and Alyssa Dittamore added four points and P. Dittamore another three-pointer.

But here came Neoga. The Indians' Haylee Campbell and Brynn Richards got unwound and went on scoring streaks. Campbell, who had 10 points in the first half, went on a 10-point tear in the third quarter, knocking in five baskets. Meanwhile, Richards tallied eight points.

Neoga kept the pressure on the final quarter with a 15-10 run as Gracie Eaton hit a three-pointer and was two of two at the line and Allison Sampson went four of four at the line.

Campbell finished with 24 points to lead the Indians. She hit 11 field goals and two free throws. Also in double figures were Richards and Sampson with 10 points each.

Cumberland was led by K. Shoemaker with 13 points on five field goals, one a three-pointer, and two of two at the line. Carr, Fritts and A. Dittamore finished on the verge of double figures with nine each.

Saturday Games

Effingham High School improved to 8-2 on the season with a 49-31 victory over Mahomet-Seymour Saturday.

The Hearts edged out to a 17-15 opening quarter lead as six players scored. Alyssa Martin and Saige Althoff connected for four points each while Bria Beals hit a three-pointer.

EHS then moved ahead 26-17 at halftime. Beals added four more points to her tally while Sidney Donaldson contributed two baskets for four points.

EHS had a slight 7-6 third quarter as Beals knocked in another three-pointer. But the Hearts went on a 16-6 final period run to put the game away. Martin added two baskets while five other players scored in the contest.

Mahomet-Seymour was led by Reese Gallier with 16 points.

The Hearts are back in action today with another Apollo Conference matchup. EHS will be traveling to Charleston.

At Newton

Newton hosted Flora and tallied a 50-32 victory Saturday.

The Eagles held a 13-7 opening quarter lead and led 24-19 at halftime. The Eagles finished strong with a 16-2 final quarter.

Three players hit double digits for Newton. Camryn Martin led the way with 15 points on two three-pointers and seven of 10 at the line. Lilly Kessler added 11 and Izzy Meinhart 10.

Kessler and C. Martin led the way in rebounds with eight each. C. Martin and Karasyn Martin had three assists each. C. Martin led in steals with three.

Newton improved to 5-4 on the season and will return to action today, traveling to Salem.

Newton also nabbed the junior varsity game, 35-20. Claire Probst and Allie Hermann scored 10 points each for the Eagles. Newton is 6-0 in junior varsity play.
