EHS Suffers First Loss, CHBC, Dieterich Win In Girls Basketball

TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham High School suffered its first loss of the girls basketball season Tuesday evening.

The Hearts fell to host Taylorville, 56-46. EHS held a 13-11 opening quarter lead as Bella Austin nailed two three-pointers and Alyssa Martin had a basket and two free throws.

But, the Tornadoes came roaring back, holding EHS to only one basket while putting together 12 points for a 23-15 halftime lead. Fleming hit two baskets and was three of three at the line for seven points.

Taylorville then had a 19-12 third quarter to lead 43-27 going into the final period. Six players scored for the Tornadoes.

Martin led the Hearts in the third period with six points on two baskets and two free throws.

EHS came back with a 19-15 final quarter run but it was too late. In that run, Bella Austin hit a three-pointer and a regular basket while Beals added a three-pointer and two free throws and Rylea Hodge a three-pointer.

EHS finished with only one player in double figures. Martin led with four of seven from the field and four of six at the line for 12 points.

The Hearts dropped to 5-1 on the season and are back in action Thursday at Mount Vernon.

Effingham claimed the junior varsity victory, 43-42. Tessa Radattz and Mya Harvey scored 13 points each for the Hearts.

At Cowden

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City moved above the .500 mark with a 60-47 win over Pana Tuesday evening.

The Bobcats' Macee Rodman had an outstanding game. Rodman connected on 13 free throws and hit nine field goals that included a three-pointer for 32 total points. She also pulled down 12 rebounds, led in steals with five and assists with three.

CHBC held Pana scoreless in taking a 13-0 opening quarter lead. The Bobcats led 28-12 at halftime.

The winners improved to 4-3 on the season.

Pana captured the junior varsity contest, 29-27. CHBC was led by Haley Doty with nine points.

At Dieterich

Dieterich ran off to a 16-2 opening quarter lead and put away Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville to the tune of 52-36 Tuesday evening.

The Maroons ran out to a 16-2 opening quarter lead as Miley Britton scored seven points and Kady Tegeler five.

The scoring slowed down for Dieterich in the second period as OPH came back with a slight 7-6 edge. Dieterich still held a 22-9 halftime lead.

Dieterich then had a 30-27 second half.

Two players hit double figures for the Maroons. Britton led the way with 20 points on seven field goals, three of those trifectas and three of four at the line. Kady Tegeler finished with 14 points.

Dieterich also nabbed the junior varsity game, 44-12. Addison MIller led the Maroons with 24 points.
