Dieterich Captures CHBC Girls Tournament Championship

COWDEN -- Dieterich came through with a 36-33 win over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Saturday to capture the championship of the Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Girls Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament.

Dieterich moved into a 12-3 opening quarter lead as Ruby Westendorf and Miley Britton scored two baskets each. The lead went to 21-6 at halftime.

In the second half, Windsor/Stew-Stras came back with a 12-7 third period to pull within 28-18 and outscored Dieterich 15-8 in the final quarter but couldn't make up that first half lead by the Maroons.

Westendorf and Brittney Niemerg led the way for the Maroons with eight points each while Britton and Estella Meinhart had seven each.

WSS was led by Kinkelaar with 16 points.

In the third place contest, Brownstown/St. Elmo won over North Clay (Louisville), 56-42.

Lexi Seabaugh got BSE off in the right direction by scoring eight of her team's 10 points in that opening quarter 10-3 run. BSE then had a 14-10 second period to lead 24-13 at halftime.

BSE had a slight 14-13 third period as Seabaugh added to her total with seven more points and Dayana Haslett had six.

Miah Ballard led the way for the Cardinals with eight points as she connected on two three-pointers.

BSE continued with an edge, this one 18-16 in the final quarter.

Seabaugh led the way with 25 points on 11 field goals, one from three-point range, and two of two at the line. Dayana Haslett added 13 points.

North Clay was led by Ballard with 17 points on six field goals, two three-pointers and three of five at the line. Alexis VanDyke chipped in with 15 points, hitting five three-point shots.

The fifth place contest went to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City over Cumberland, 48-35. CHBC moved ahead 22-15 at halftime, connected on seven points from the free throw line.

The Bobcats had a 23-14 third quarter as Macee Rodman scored seven points.

Rodman led the way for CHBC with 14 points on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and five of seven at the line.

Cumberland was led by Jade Carr and Kendra Leitch with 10 points each.

In Friday games for Cumberland, the Pirates pounded Red Hill (Bridgeport), 61-29. Paige Dittamore led the way with 17 points while Suzy Fritts had 11 and Katelyn Shoemaker 10.

North Clay downed Cumberland, 50-40 with a 19-6 opening quarter lead.

The Cardinals were led by Miah Ballard with 24 points on nine field goals and six free throws. Matia Price added 11.

Cumberland was led by Carr with 12.

BSE edged CHBC, 57-52 Friday.

BSE held a 12-10 opening quarter lead and led 28-22 at halftime. CHBC came back with a 14-11 third period but BSE got back on track in the final period, hitting 10 of 11 from the free throw line.

Day. Haslett led the way with 23 points while Seabaugh added 14 and Presley Williams 13.

CHBC was led by Rodman with 21 points on five field goals, three from three-point range, and eight of 13 at the line. Shaelyn Nohren chipped in with 11.

Members of the All-Tournament team were Miley Britton (Dieterich), Most Valuable Player; Ella Kinkelaar (WSS), Samantha Hayes (WSS), Kady Tegeler (Dieterich), Lexi Seabaugh (BSE), Dayana Haslett (BSE), Miah Ballard (North Clay) and Macee Rodman (CHBC).
