Hearts, Eagles Win At Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tourney

NEWTON -- Effingham and Newton both picked up victories at the Bob Kerans Girls Basktball Tournament Wednesday evening.

The Hearts bounced Flora to the tune of 56-18 in the first game of the evening. EHS went on a 24-1 opening quarter run as Averie Wolfe knocked in two three-pointers and two regular baskets for 10 points while Saige Atlhoff added six and Rylea Hodge and Bria Beals a three-pointer each.

The Hearts had a 16-3 second period to lead 40-4 at halftime. Alyssa Martin scored six points and Althoff added on four more.

EHS had a 13-12 third quarter edge and finished out with a 3-2 final period.

Three players tallied in double figures. Wolfe totaled 15 points on six field goals, three from trifecta land. Martin and Althoff added 10 each. EHS hit five three-pointers in the contest.

In the second game, Newton handed Altamont a 55-43 loss.

The Eagles took off to a 16-13 opening quarter lead. Camryn Martin connected on four baskets, one a three-pointer, and hit a free throw for 10 points in the quarter. Karasyn Martin added a three-pointer. The lead went to 30-25 at halftime. K. Martin tallied five points and Lilly Kessler four.

Skylie Kelin kept the Indians in the contest with five points on a three-pointer and regular basket.

Altamont rallied in the third period with an 11-8 run to pull within 38-36 going into the final quarter. Grace Nelson went on a seven point run for the Indians.

But the Eagles came back with a 17-7 final quarter as C. Martin scored 11 points.

C. Martin finished with 27 points on nine field goals, two three-pointers, and seven of eight at the line. Kessler added 14 and K. Martin 10. Kessler led in rebounding with 18 while Macy Barthelemy pulled down 13. Newton improves to 3-1.

Altamont was led by Nelson with 18 points on six field goals, two of those three-pointers and four of seven at the line. Klein added 11.

In two days of action at the tourney, Effingham and Newton are 2-0 while Altamont is 1-1 and Flora 0-2.

The tournament comes to a close with Friday's schedule which includes Flora against Altamont at noon and Newton and Effingham squaring off at 1:30 for the championship.
