EHS, St. A Fall at St. Anthony Turkey Tournament

Both city high schools fell in Wednesday's play at the Effingham St. Anthony Boys Basketball Turkey Tournament.

In the opener, Rantoul was a 63-51 winner over the Hearts. EHS moved into a 13-12 opening quarter lead on Rantoul as Cannon Bockhorn put in a basket and two free throws and KJ Kellam knocked down a three-pointer.

But Rantoul came back with a 15-7 second quarter to lead 27-20 at halftime. The Hearts mustered only three baskets in the period led by Kellams' four points.

The Hearts rallied in the third period with a 17-14 run to pull within 41-37 going into the final quarter. Bockhorn contributed eight of the 14 points on three baskets, including a three-pointer, and a free throw.

But Rantoul went on a 22-14 final period surge, hitting four baskets and putting in eight of 11 free tthrows.

The Hearts were led by Bockhorn with 17 points on six field goals and four of five at the line and Kellams with 12.

In the next contest, Mattoon was a 65-54 winner over Robinson.

St. Anthony finished out the evening suffering a 58-44 loss to Belleville East.

Belleville East edged out to a 14-10 opening quarer lead. The Bulldogs remained close on a six-point run by Brock Fearday.

In the second quarter, St. Anthony rallied with a 13-12 run to pull within 26-23 at halftime. B. Fearday chipped in another four points on a basket and two free throws. Collin Westendorf led the way in the quarter with two three-pointers and a free throw for seven.

Belleville East came back with a 15-10 third quarter to push its lead to 41-33 going into the final period then had a 17-11 run.

Three players hit double digits for Belleville East while two players finished with double figures for the Bulldogs.

St. Anthony was led by B. Fearday with seven field goals and five of six at the line for 20 points. Westendorf added 15 points on three field goals, two of those three-pointers, and seven of eight at the line.

The tournament continues Friday with Rantoul against Belleville East at 3 p.m., Breese Central taking on Robinson at 4:30, Mattoon against Champaign Central at 6  and St. Anthony and Effingham squaring off at 7:30.

The finals are scheduled for Saturday.
