CARBONDALE -- Teutopolis just wanted to make it exciting.

The Wooden Shoes led by nine points at the Class 2A SIU-Carbondale Boys Basketball Super-Sectional going into the final quarter and could only muster a basket while Pinckneyville went on an 11-point run to knot the score sending the game into overtime Monday evening.

From there, the Shoes again only connected on one basket but hit six free throws to pull out a 42-40 victory and earn a berth in the Class 2A State Tournament.

The two teams stayed pretty even through the first half as the Shoes held a 20-17 lead. Brendan Niebrugge got the Shoes going by scoring six of his team's nine points in the opening quarter. Niebrugge connected on a three-pointer and a regular basket and was one of two at the line. James Niebrugge added the other three points.

The Shoes then had an 11-10 second period to lead 20-17 at halftime. This time around it was Joey Niebrugge taking over the scoring duties with two baskets and two free throws. B. Niebrugge hit another three-pointer.

T-town seemed to have things well in hand with a 12-6 third quarter run. B. Niebrugge's three-point barrage continued with two more in the quarter and James Niebrugge added two more baskets and it looked like the Shoes were going to easily sail into the victory.

But the Panthers had other ideas. Hunter Smith, who had contributed only one three-pointer through the first three quarters, hit two baskets and a free throw for five of his team's 11 final period points. Kellen Scott hit a basket and a free throw.

Meanwhile, T-town struggled offensively. B. Niebrugge hit the lone basket as the Shoes missed six other shots in the quarter.

Then came the overtime period and the Shoes came through, especially from the free throw line. T-town's James Niebrugge connected on the lone basket and hit a free throw while Caleb Siemer, Garrett Gaddis and Mitch Koester also connected on one free throw each and B. Niebrugge hit two of two and the Shoes pulled out the win.

B. Niebrugge hit six of 13 from the field and was three of four at the line for 19 points to lead the Shoes in scoring. Also in double figures was James Niebrugge with 12.

Siemer connected on one basket but was a demon on the boards, pulling down 13 in the contest while James Niebrugge had seven boards.

James Niebrugge had three steals in the game, two in the fourth quarter when he stole the ball, hit a basket, was fouled and put in the free throw. Niebrugge then stole a pass when Pinckneyville headed downcourt to attempt a field goal to tie the contest and send it into a second overtime.

Siemer and Gaddis had three assists each. Siemer and Joey Niebrugge had two blocked shots each.

The Wooden Shoes struggled from the field with 34.1 percent from two-point range and were 44.4 percent from three-point range. However, they connected on 62.5 percent at the line.

Pinckneyville was led by Karsen Konkel with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Panthers finished the season with a 28-7 record. The Panthers hit only 30.7 percent from the field and from three-point range and was 60 percent at the line.
