Altamont, St. Anthony, T-town Advance In Boys Regionals

NOKOMIS -- Altamont High School advanced to the championship game of the Class 1A Nokomis Boys Basketball Regional with an easy victory over Mulberry Grove Wednesday.

Altamont put the game away early with a 21-11 opening quarter run. Mason Robinson connected on two regular baskets and two three-pointers for 10 points while Wyatt Phillips hit a three-pointer and a regular basket for five and Avery Jahraus connected on a three-pointer.

Although the scoring for Altamont slowed down, the team had double the score at halftime, 32-16.

Carlyle wasn't quite done yet as the squad came back with a 17-12 third quarter but still trailed by 11 going into the final period.

Altamont then socked the game away with an 18-15 final quarter run as Robinson scored six more points and finished with 18 to lead Altamont. Robinson connected on seven field goals, three from trifecta land, and was one of two at the line.

Also in double figures was Avery Jahraus with 13.

Altamont hit eight three-pointers led by Robinson and Jahraus with three each and Wyatt Phillips and Dillan Elam with one each.

Altamont improved to 26-4 on the season.

In the second game, another National Trail Conference team, St. Elmo/Brownstown, didn't come out a winner.

The Eagles, seeded eighth, fell to fourth-seeded Nokomis, 56-37.

Nokomis took the early lead and never looked back. The Warriors moved into a 16-5 opening quarter lead and led 38-12 at halftime.

SEB came back with a 25-18 second half but couldn't make up the first half run by the Warriors.

The Eagles had a bad shooting night, connecting on only 29 percent from two-point range and 31 percent from three-point land.

Nokomis, meanwhile, hit 53 percent from the field and were 91 percent from the free throw line with 11 of 12.

SEB had only one player finish in double figures. Caleb Campbell led the way with 11 points on four field goals that included three trifectas.

The Eagles' Jarrett Pasley, a senior, broke a school record during the evening. He broke Zeke Asher's season three-point field goals made with a record of 72. He also set a  career 3 point record as a co-op record.

Altamont and Nokomis advanced to the championship game scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. The winner then advances to the Altamont Sectional Tuesday to take on the winner of the Cumberland Regional, either Casey-Westfield or Macon Meridian.

Class 1A Cumberland Regional

Both area squads in this regional fell by the wayside Wednesday evening.

Casey-Westfield opened the evening with a 56-35 win over Neoga.

The Warriors edged out to a 9-4 opening quarter lead on the Indians.

Although the scoring would improve, Neoga was still in the contest at halftime, trailing 24-17.

The Warriors had a 14-11 third period run to lead by 10 going into the final quarter. that's when Casey-Westfield took off with an 18-7 run.

Neoga could muster only one field goal in that final period and hit five of eight from the free throw line.

Casey-Westfield had two players in double figures. Hayden Parcel led with 15 points while Jacob Clement added 11.

Neoga had three players in double digits. Quintin Richards led the way with 11 points while Landon Titus and Brady Reynolds added 10 each.

In the second game, Macon Meridian edged Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, 59-50.

Meridian edged out to an 18-14 opening quarter lead but Windsor/Stew-Stras came back with a 14-12 second period to trail by only two points at halftime, 30-28.

The Hatchets then took a 42-39 lead with a 14-9 third period.

But Meridian came roaring back with a 20-8 final quarter for the nine-point win.

Austin Wittenberg led Windsor/Stew-Stras with 17 points on five field goals that included two three-pointers, and was five of five at the line. Jordan Wittenberg chipped in with 10 points. Jackson Gurgel was on the edge of double figures with nine points.

Windsor/Stew-Stras finished the season with a 21-10 record. Meridian advanced with a 10-21 mark.

Casey-Westfield will face Macon Meridian at 7 p.m. Friday for the regional championship and the right to advance to the Altamont Sectional.

Class 1A South Central Regional

Effingham St. Anthony came out a winner in the South Central Regional Tuesday evening.

In the opener, Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran defeated Cisne, 61-46.

Then two National Trail Conference teams collided as St. Anthony and North Clay (Louisville) squared off In the second game of the evening.

North Clay edged out to a 17-16 opening quarter lead behind Logan Fleener's five field goals and two free throws for 12 of his team's points. Alex Boose chipped in with the other five.

Brock Fearday led the Bulldogs with seven points while Ryan Schmidt connected on two three-pointers.

But St. Anthony went on a second quarter tear, outscoring North Clay 18-8 to lead 34-25 at halftime. Five players scored for the Bulldogs led by Schmidt with two more three-pointers and Griffin Sehy hit a three-pointer.

The Bulldogs kept the pressure on with an 18-11 third quarter and again multiple players scored . St. Anthony held a 52-36 lead going into the final quarter.

St. Anthony then had an 10-9 final period.

Schmidt led St. Anthony with 19 points on six field goals, five of those three-pointers, and two of two at the line. B. Fearday tallied 15 and Sehy added 12.

The Cardinals were led by Fleener with 19 points on eight field goals and three of four at the line. Boose also tallied in double figures with 13. North Clay ended the season with a 21-10 record.

St. Anthony advances to the championship game with a 21-10 mark and will meet Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran at 7 p.m. Friday. The winner advances to the Altamont Sectional and will face the winner of the Tuscola Regional at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.

Class 2A Teutopolis Regional

Teutopolis opened the evening at its own regional with a 68-35 win over Shelbyville Tuesday.

The Wooden Shoes edged out to an 8-6 opening quarter lead then went on a tear through the next three quarters for the 33-point victory.

T-town led 24-15 at halftime and 42-23 going into the final quarter.

James Niebrugge led the way in scoring with 19 points on six field goals, two from three-point range, and five of five at the line. Brent Niebrugge added 14 points on six field goals, two from three-point range. Caleb Siemer led in rebounds with 15 and had nine points.

T-town is now 24-7 on the season.

In the second game, Robinson won over Sullivan, 60-53.

Teutopolis and Robinson will meet for the regional championship Friday at 7 p.m.

Class 2A Teutopolis Regional

Newton's season came to a close in the Lawrenceville Regional Tuesday.

In the opening contest, Lawrenceville won over Fairfield, 64-43.

The second game went to Mount Carmel over Newton, 63-53.

Mount Carmel took a 15-11 opening quarter lead and led by that four-point margin at halftime, 28-24. The Golden Aces continued on with a 14-12 third period.

Caden Nichols led the Eagles with 19 points on seven field goals, three of those three-pointers, and two of two at the line. Kye Bergbower also finished in double figures with 11.

Mount Carmel connected on eight three-pointers in the game led by Levi Beesley with four. The Golden Aces were 21 of 30 from the free throw line.

Lawrenceville and Mount Carmel will square off for the regional championship Friday at 7 p.m.

Mount Vernon downed Marion, 53-48 while Herrin won over Richland County. 50-38.

Mount Vernon meets Herrin Friday at 7 p.m. for the regional championship.
