St. Anthony claimed the championship of the Class 1A North Clay Regional.

LOUISVILLE -- Effingham St. Anthony High School claimed the championship of the Class 1A North Clay Regional Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs won, 59-46 despite trailing the Cardinals in the opening quarter and at halftime.

North Clay moved ahead 14-12 in the opening quarter as five players scored. Lucy Fearday kept the Bulldogs close, scoring 10 of their 12 points.

St. Anthony then had a 15-9 second period to lead 29-21 at halftime. The Bulldogs went on a 19-5 third quarter tear behind Nancy Ruholl's eight opitns and seven by Anna Faber and that was the contest.

St. Anthony had three players finish in double figures. Nancy Ruholl led the way with 19 points on six field goals, two from three-point range, and five of eight at the line.

Also in double figures were Lucy Fearday with 16 points and Anna Faber with 14.

North Clay had three players hit double digits. Miah Ballard led with 20 points on seven field goals and five of eight at the line. Alexis VanDyke and Allison Czyzewski added 10 points each.

St. Anthony advances to the Casey-Westfield Sectional where it will face Tuscola Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Tuscola defeated Catlin Salt Fork 51-45 to win the Salt Fork Regional.

The other two regionals feeding into the Casey-Westfield Sectional are at Neoga, where the host squad will meet Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 7 tonight for that championship, and the Arcola Regional where Arcola and Hume Shiloh square off tonight at 7 for the regional title.

Class 2A Carmi-White County Regional

Teutopolis came out the champion in the Carmi-White County Regional Thursday with a 45-25 win over Mount Carmel.

The Wooden Shoes put this game in the win category early with a 14-4 opening quarter lead. Kaylee Niebrugge connected for seven points in the period while Molly Ruholl nailed a three-pointer.T-town held a 22-14 halftime lead as Ruholl connected on two more three-pointers.

The Shoes then had a 23-11 second half. Niebrugge finished out with five points in that final quarter and tallied 16 for the contest. She hit six field goals, one a three-pointer, and was three of three at the line.

Two other Wooden Shoes were on the verge of double figures as Ruholl and Emily Konkel scored nine each.

Courtney Gibson pulled down five rebounds while Katie Kremer, Summer Wall and M. Ruholl had four each. Wall led in steals with five. Konkel, Kremer and Niebrugge had one assist each.

T-town now advances to the Pana Sectional and will meet host Pana at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Pana was a 50-28 winner over Tolono Unity at the Warrensburg-Latham Regional.

Class 2A Flora Regional

Robinson ended Newton's season with a 58-41 victory to win the Flora Regional championship Thursday.

The Maroons took a 19-10 opening quarter lead and led 32-22 at halftime. The teams played to an even 12-12 third quarter and Robinson made sure with a 14-7 final period.

Lilly Kessler led the way for the Eagles with 16 points on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of four at the line. Camryn Martin tallied 12. Kessler also led in rebounds with 14. Karasyn Martin, Macy Barthelemy and Kessler had two steals each.

"I am so proud of this team and what they accomplished ths year," said Newton Coach Brad Harris. "They dealt with a lot of difficulties and worked hard every day to keep getting bettter. They put together a strong finish to the season and made it to the regional championship.

"Thank you to Alexis Hetzer, our lone senior. She had to deal with a season-ending injury but always had a positive attitude. She was a great leader by example.

"Next season is very promising as we will return so many players. It will be a very exciting season."

Effingham will be meeting host Mattoon tonight at 7 for the championship of this regional.

The winner advances to the Centralia Sectional Tuesday.
