Three Area Teams Headed To Eighth-Grade State Boys Basketball Tourneys

Three area eighth-grade boys basketball teams are headed to State Tournaments Saturday.

 

Class 8-1A Pana Sacred Heart Sectional

Effingham Sacred Heart advanced to the Class 1A State Tournament at Assumption Central A&M Middle School.

The Shamrocks defeated Carrollton St. John, 49-40 to win the Pana Sacred Heart Sectional Monday.

Sacred Heart improved to 17-6 on the season and will play at 11:30 a.m. Saturday against Mattoon St. John's (14-6).

Other teams in the field include Peoria Heights St. Thomas (19-6), Springfield Christ the King (20-6), Peru Catholic (22-2), Royal Prairieview Ogden (19-5), Odell (23-2) and Bloomington Corrnerstone (19-5).

The winners from the four games will advance to 5 p.m .and 6:30 p.m. contests. The winner of those games will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 16 for the championship while the losers will play for third place at 6 p.m.

Class 8-2A Effingham St. Anthony Sectional

Effingham St. Anthony went overtime with  Assumption Central A&M to win its own sectional Monday evening.

The Bullpups trailed Central A&M 16-6 after the opening quarter and 21-11 at halftime.

In the second half, St. Anthony came alive and had a 13-9 run to pull within 30-24 going into the final period. Waldhoff connected on a three-pointer and a regular basket for five in the quarter while Wilhour and Looman added four each.

In the final period, St. Anthony continued on with an 11-5 run behind five points by Wlilhour and four points by Waldhoff and the score was knotted at 35-35 sending the contest into overtime.

In the overtime period, Utz scored a basket and Wilhour and Waldhoff connected on two free throws each and Bierman added a free throw to pull out the win.

Wilhour tallied 15 and Waldhoff 11 for the Bullpups.

St. Anthony (17-9) advances to the Class 8-2A State Tournament at Kankakee Bishop McNamara High School Saturday and will play in the fourth game of the day at 2:30 p.m. against Champaign St. Matthew (22-6)

Other teams in the field include Mount Sterling Brown County (26-1), Dwight (17-6), Decatur Robertson (13-0), Hardin Calhoun (22-3), Kankakee Bishop McNamara (24-2) and Bartonville Monroe (24-4).

Class 8-3A Paris Mayo Sectional

Teutopolis emerged the champion of the Paris Mayo Sectional Monday with a 55-27 win over Cumberland.

The Wooden Shoes moved into an 18-10 opening quarter lead then pushed that to 33-17 at halftime.

T-town had a 22-10 second half run.

Kendal Mette was the lone T-town player in double figures with 15. Ross Bloemer added nine and Jake Kocher eight.

Cumberland was led by Roedl with 12 and Stewart with eight.

T-town advances to the Class 8-3A State Tournament at Tolono Unity High School with a 25-3 record and will meet East St. Louis Lincoln (23-4) at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Other teams in the field are Chillicothe (17-10), Dolton Lincoln (12-1), Monticello (18-8), Glenwood Brookwood (26-1), Riverton (24-2) and Metamora (21-5).
