St. A, CHBC Nab Wins, Girls Basketball Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony finished National Trail Conference play in girls basketball with a perfect 8-0 record Saturday with a 59-36 win over North Clay (Louisville).

The Bulldogs didn't mess around, roaring out to a 19-8 opening quarter lead as Nancy Ruholl connected on two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight in the quarter.

St. Anthony continued on with a 14-7 second period to lead 33-15 at halftime. In that quarter, Stacie Vonderheide and Lucy Fearday provided five points each. 

North Clay was led by Mia Ballard with five points in the second period and seven by halftime.

The Cardinals came back with a 16-13 third quarter as Ballard connected on three baskets for six while Alexis VanDyke nailed two three-pointers.

But that was the last gasp by the Cardinals as St. Anthony had a 13-5 final period for the winning margin.

Ruholl finished with 14 points on five field goals, four from three-point range. Anna Faber added 13 and Vonderheide 11.

North Clay was led by Ballard with 18 points on seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of four from the line.

St. Anthony improved to 23-5 overall and that ties the win total from last season.

At Cowden-Herrick

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City tallied a 51-35 win over Flora Saturday.

The Bobcats held a 27-19 halftime lead then had a 24-16 second half run.

Three players finished in double figures for the Bobcats. Macee Rodman led the way with 17 points on seven field goals and three free throws. Gracie Heckert tallied 16 and Mady Wojcik finished with 15.

Wojcik and Ruby Stuckemeyer led in rebounds with 11 each. Heckert led in steals with three and assists with five.

CHBC improved to 16-10 on the season.

In junior varsity play, Flora was a 46-28 winner. CHBC was led by Koda Colman with eight points. CHBC dropped to 6-10.

At Lincoln

Effingham traveled to Lincoln and ran into a buzzsaw in Apollo Conference playFriday.

The Hearts fell to the homestanders, 78-27. The Railsplitters ran out to a 19-4 opening quarter lead and never relented, takng a 41-12 halftime lead.

Lincoln finished with a 37-20 second half.

Effingham had one player in double figures. Alyssa Martin led the way with four field goals and two of three at the free throw line for 10 points

Kloe Froebe led the way for Lincoln with 31 points on 11 field goals that included four three-pointers, and was five of six at the line. Also in double figures was Jenna Bowman with 14.

At Nokomis

Altamont took on Nokomis on its home floor and fell, 76-46 Friday.

The Indians played Nokomis to a 16-16 opening quarter tie. Skylie Klein connected on three trifectas and four of four at the line for 13 of her team's 16 points.

Altamont hung in there and was still tied at halftime, 31-31.

However Nokomis got going in the third quarter with a 24-9 run to lead 55-40 heading into the final quarter and finished out with a 21-6 score.

Four players hit double figures for Nokomis led by Natalie Engelman with 21 points. Engelman connected on seven three-pointers.

Altamont had two players in double figures. Klein finished with 16 points while Kaylee Lurkins added 12.

At Champaign

Teutopolis and Bloomington Central Catholic squared off in a game at Parkland College and the Wooden Shoes fell, 48-37 Friday.

BCC edged out to a 14-10 opening quarter lead. Kaylee Niebrugge hit three two-pointers and was two of three at the line for eight points.

The Saints then had a 16-10 second period to lead 30-20 at halftime.

T-town played BCC almost even in the second half, trailing just 18-17 but couldn't get over that first half run.

Niebrugge was the lone Wooden Shoes player in double figures with 12.

Courtney Gibson led in rebounds with six and assists with four. Niebrugge had three steals.
