EHS, S. Central, CHBC, BSE Claim Girls Basketball Wins

Effingham High School took off to a 12-2 opening quarter lead on Mattoon in Apollo Conference girls basketball action Thursday and went on for a 50-46 victory.

The Hearts stepped out to the 10-point lead behind Ella Niebrugge's eight points on two three-pointers and two of two at the line.

The Hearts then had a slight 6-5 second quarter to lead 18-9 at halftime.

"We really has a nice first half defensively," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer.

EHS continued on with a 14-11 third quarter as Niebrugge and Madison Mapes had five points each and Bria Beals contributed four. Each player knocked in a three-pointer.

The Green Wave came roaring back in the final period with a 28-18 run but fell short. In that run, Emily Maple hit three trifectas and a regular basket and was three of four at the free throw line for half of her team's points in the quarter. Lily Ghere scored nine points,.

But the Hearts hit their free throws with 10 of 16. Niebrugge and Saige Althoff scored five each.

EHS finished with 17 of 27 from the line while Mattoon was 10 of 19.

Niebrugge was the lone EHS player in double figures with 18 on five field goals and five of six at the line. Althoff finished with nine while Mapes, Beals and Marissa Allie had seven each.

Effingham improved to 4-4 in the Apollo Conference and 17-7 overall.

At Dieterich

South Central came calling as two National Trail Conference teams went head-to-head and the Cougars pulled out a 68-66 win over Dieterich Thursday.

The two teams played to a 13-13 opening quarter tie. Brooklyn Garrett scored six of the Cougars points. Dieterich was led by six players who scored in the quarter.

Dieterich then went on a 22-15 second period run. Cortney Brummer scored six points and Miley Britton five. Brummer and Britton connected on a three-pointer as did Brittney Niemerg and the Maroons led 35-28.

But here came the Cougars. South Central had an 18-13 third quarter run as Garrett led the way with seven points and Taegan Webster added five points. Dieterich still held a 48-46 lead going into the final period.

South Central continued on with a 22-18 final period to pull out the two-point victory. Webster hit three baskets and a free throw for seven points while Garrett hit five of six at the line and scored a basket, also for seven. Brooke Conger contributed four points.

Kady Tegeler led for Dieterich in the final period with seven points.

South Central had two players hit the double digit mark. Garrett led the way with 24 points on six field goals, that included a three-pointer, and 11 of 16 from the free throw line. Webster added 19 on eight field goals and three free throws.

Dieterich was led by Tegeler with 17 points on seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and two of two at the line. Britton tallied 14.

Dieterich claimed the junior varsity game, 31-14. Addison Miller led with 10 points. South Central was led by Kaitlyn Swift with six.

At Cowden

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City edged Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, 54-51 as the two National Trail Conference teams met Thursday.

CHBC held an 11-10 opening quarter lead but WSS tied at 19-19 at halftime.

The Bobcats then moved ahead with a 21-15 third period to lead 40-34 going into the final quarter. WSS came back with a 17-14 run but CHBC held on for the three-point win.

Gracie Heckert led the winners with 17 points on five field goals and seven of 10 at the line. Also in double figures were Mady Wojcik with 13 and Ruby Stuckemeyer with 10. Wojcik and Stuckemeyer pulled down nine rebounds each. Wojcik had four steals. Marissa Summers led in assists with five and Stuckemeyer had four.

CHBC hit 19 of 28 free throws while WSS was 12 of 17. CHBC improved to 15-8 on the season.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Ella Kinkelaar with 25 points on seven field goals, two of those three-pointers, and nine of 12 at the line. Sam Hayes added 16 points. The Hatchets had seven three-pointers in the contest, four by Hayes and two by Kinkelaar.

In junior varsity play, CHBC was a 41-32 winner. Karlee Smith led the winners with 17 points while Shae Nohren added 10. WSS was led by Longwell with 13.

At Brownstown

Brownstown/St. Elmo took care of business and handed Ramsey a 60-30 loss in Thursday competition.

The Bombers took a 17-11 opening quarter lead as Alice Turco scored five points and Laney Baldrige added four.

That lead went to 33-17 at halftime. Baldrige nailed three two-pointers for six while Avery Myers had a three-pointer.

BSE continued its relentless scoring with a 16-7 third period run. This time around it was Seabaugh on target with three baskets and two of two at the line for eight while Jayna Ireland added six.

Baldrige finished with 16 points on seven field goals and two of four at the line. Seabaugh chipped in with 14 on five field goals and four of six at the line. The Bombers connected on 11 of 17 from the gratis stripe.

In the junior varsity game, BSE edged Ramsey, 25-23. Williams led with 11 points for the winners. Ramsey was led by Eddy with nine.

At Brownstown

At Olney

Newton traveled to Olney and fell to the Tigers, 31-26.

Richland County edged out to an 11-6 opening quarter lead and led 19-11 at halftime. The Eagles came back with an 8-5 third quarter to pull within 24-19 going into the final quarter. The two teams then played to a 7-7 final period.

Lilly Kessler led the way for Newton with 15 points on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and two of four at the line. Kessler also led in rebounds with 20. Camryn Martin led in steals with two.

Newton drops to 11-14 on the season.

The Eagles claimed the junior varsity game, 27-12. Meinhart led Newton with 10 points as the team improved to 11-3.

Tri-County played host to Cumberland sent the Pirates home with a 58-37 loss Thursday evening.

Tri-County took a 30-22 halftime lead then had a 16-7 third period run.

Abbie Becker led the Pirates with 12 points while Katelyn Shoemaker added nine. Becker knocked in three trifectas.

At Louisville

North Clay (Louisville) defeated Sandoval in a non-conference matchup Thursday, 58-38.

North Clay is now 14-9 on the season and is back in action Monday against Effingham St. Anthony.
