GREENVILLE -- Effingham and Effingham St. Anthony both lost on the final day of the 74th Annual James Burke Memorial Boys Basketball Tournament Friday.

The Bullpups fell in the third place contest to Triad, 40-37.

Effingham lost the consolation championship to Greenville, 37-23.

Winning the tournament was Staunton over Salem, 50-43.

 

SEVENTH-GRADE REGIONALS

Class 7-1A Pana Sacred Heart

Effingham Sacred Heart and Neoga advanced from first round play Saturday in the Pana Sacred Heart Regional.

The Shamrocks edged Findlay Okaw Valley 31-30 in the first game of the day.

Decatur Lutheran downed Sigel St. Michael 35-17 in the second contest.

The third game went to Neoga over Windsor, 32-23.

In the second round, Effingham Sacred Heart fell to Pana Sacred Heart, 46-22 and Neoga lost to Decatur Lutheran, 42-29.

Pana Sacred Heart and Decatur Lutheran meet Wednesday for the championship at 6:30 p.m.

 

Class 7-1A Hutsonville Regional

North Clay (Louisville) advanced to second round play in the Hutsonville Regional Saturday.

In the opening contest, Kansas was a 27-15 winner over host Hutsonville.

Mattoon St. John's defeated Chrisman Scottland, 60-19 in the second game.

The third contest went to North Clay over Martinsville, 48-7. North Clay improved to 11-7 on the season.

Today's games feature Newton St. Thomas against Kansas at 5:30 p.m. followed by Mattoon St. John and North Clay meeting at 7 p.m.

The winners advance to the title contest Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

 

Class 7-2A Nokomis Regional

Altamont and Stewardson-Strasburg were opening round winners in the Nokomis Regional Saturday.

Altamont downed St. Elmo/Brownstown, 25-19.

Stew-Stras then won over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 52-21.

Stew-Stras took a 14-5 opening quarter lead and had a 22-4 third quarter run.

Duncan tallied 19 for the winners while Manhart added 10. CHBC was led by Vaughn with eight points.

Windsor/Stew-Stras advances with a 15-7 record to meet Nokomis at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

In the opener, Altamont takes on Assumption Central A&M at 6 p.m.

Class 7-2A Effingham St. Anthony Regional

South Central claimed the opening game at the St. Anthony Regonal. South Central defeated Casey-Westfield, 41-21.

In the second matchup, St. Anthony was a winner over Oblong, 46-10.

The Bullpups took a 15-4 opening quarter lead as Conner Storm nailed eight points. Cooper Sehy took over, scoring eight points in the second period as the Bullpups led 30-7.

Sehy finished with 17 points on eight field goals and one of two at the line. Storm finished with 10.

In the second round tonight, Dieterich faces South Central at 6 p.m. followed by St. Anthony taking on Paris Crestwood at 7:15 p.m.

The winners advance to the championship game Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Class 7-3A Sullivan Regional

Teutopolis opened this regional with a big-scoring victory over Decatur Dennis by a 58-11 count Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes swept out to a 21-0 opening quarter lead and led 38-6 at halftime.

Jake Probst led the way for the Shoes with 11 points while Eric Weidner added 10. Keegan Swingler led in assists with five. Luke Niebrugge had five rebounds and Dylan Horn led in steals with four.

Sullivan was a 43-19 winner in the second contest over Shelbyville Moulton.

The third game went to Tuscola East Prairie over Arthur, 45-14.

Decatur Johns Hill finished out the day with a 57-21 win over Macon Meridian.

Tuesday's games feature Teutopolis against Sulilvan at 6 p.m. followed by Tuscola E. Prairie taking on Decatur Johns Hill at 7:15 p.m.

The winners advance to a Thursday championship contest at 6 p.m.

Class 7-4A Rochester Regional

Effingham claimed its opener in the Rochester Regional Saturday.

The Mustangs won easily over Stephen Decatur, 45-15.

EJHS moved into an 8-2 opening quarter lead and led 12-7 at halftime. Then came the big quarter in the third with a 20-8 run and the Mustangs finished out with a 13-0 final period.

Jenner Pals scored 21 and Westin Hayes 11 in the win.

In the second contest, Taylorville won over Mattoon, 44-25 and the final game went to Mount Zion over Charleston, 45-39.

Effingham, seeded fourth, will now meet top-seeded Rochester today at 5 p.m. followed by Taylorville against Mount Zion at 6:15.

The winner advances to a 5:30 p.m. championship game Wednesday.
