BROWNSTOWN -- Stewardson-Strasburg captured the championship of the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday.

Stew-Stras edged out to a 12-11 lead on South Central behind two three-pointers by Wetherell. Wetherell then hit two more three-pointers in the second period but the two teams were tied at 20-20 at halftime as Neilson was leading the way for South Central. Neilson hit nine of his team's 11 points in the first period and had two baskets in the second quarter.

Stew-Stras had a 9-4 third quarter run to lead 29-24. Pruemer hit a three-pointer while Vonderheide had four points and Bible a basket. 

Stew-Stras then had a 12-8 final quarter as Bible connected for six points for the 41-32 victory.

Wetherell led the way for the winners with 14 points on four three-pointers and two of two at the line. Bible finished with eight.

South Central was led by Neilson with 15 points on seven field goals and one of one at the line. Kruger chipped in with 10 points.

In the third place contest, Sigel St. Michael edged Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 37-32.

CHBC took the early 9-6 opening quarter lead as Griffin Vaughn connected on a three-pointer. Brant Niebrugge kept the Sharpshooters close with four points.

St. Michael then had a 10-7 second period to tie the score at 16-16 at halftime. Alex Mayer scored six points.

Mayer continued his scoring binge with eight points in the third period while Bryce Niebrugge connected on a three-pointer and St. Michael held a 27-16 lead going into the final period.

Then it was Brant Niebrugge who took over with eight points to lead the Sharpshooters.

CHBC's Vaughn knocked in two more three-pointers while Remington Howell had a three-pointer, a regular basket and a free throw for six.

Mayer finished with 16 to lead St. Michael while Brant Niebrugge had 14.

CHBC was led by Howell with 15 and Vaughn with nine.

In the consolation championship, Dieterich downed North Clay (Louisville), 40-30.

The two teams started slow as Dieterich edged out to a 5-3 opening quarter lead. Dieterich then warmed up with a 15-9 second quarter to lead 20-12 at halftime.

Dieterich had a slight 20-18 second half for the winning margin.

Ezra Cook led the way with 12 points, eight coming in the final quarter, while Gavin French and Bryce Bohnhoff chipped in with nine each.

North Clay was led by Griffy with 15, 10 coming in the final quarter.

James Burke Memorial Tournament

St. Anthony fell in overtime at the James Burke Memorial Tournament in Greenville Thursday.

The Bullpups dropped a 53-45 loss to Staunton.

St. Anthony took a 6-3 opening quarter lead and had a 19-11 second period to lead 25-14 at halftime. W. Bierman scored seven while M. Waldhoff hit two three-pointers and scored all six points in the opening quarter on two three-pointers.

But Staunton came back with a 13-8 third quarter to pull within 33-27 and then had a 13-6 final period to knot the score at 40-40, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Moore went to work for Staunton with eight points and the squad had a 13-3 run for the victory.

St. Anthony was led by M. Waldhoff with 17 points and G. Looman with 11.

In the other contest Thursday, Salem edged Triad, 33-30.

The loss drops St. Anthony into the third place contest today at 6 p.m. against Triad. Staunton and Salem will square off at 7 p.m. for the championship. The other game tonight features Effingham against Greenville at 5 for the consolation championship.

 At Teutopolis

Teutopolis scored over 40 points in both games in taking victories over Paris Mayo Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes won the seventh-grade game, 46-15 with a 17-4 opening quarter run.

Jake Probst led the way for the Shoes with seven points.

The seventh-grade ends regular season play with a 22-2 record and placed first in the South Central Conference. T-town will be back in action Saturday in the Class 7-3A Sullivan Regional against Decatur Dennis at 10 a.m. The Shoes drew the No. 1 seed.

In eighth-grade play, T-town was a 45-18 winner with a 26-12 opening half and then a 13-0 third quarter run.

Kendal Mette led with 17 points.

T-town ends regular season play with a 21-3 record and placed first in the South Central Conference.

At Newton

Jasper County picked up two victories over Hutsonville Thursday.

Jasper County ripped out to a 21-2 opening quarter lead in seventh-grade play and went on for a 50-23 win.

Chance Mulvey led the way with 18 points while Maddox Horner added 13. Ian  Kessler was the leading rebounder and Mulvey the top defender.

In eighth-grade action, Jasper County won 35-19 with a 14-2 opening half lead and a 16-4 third quarter.

Nolen Cleaver led with nine points while Hayden Mulvey was the top defender and Jacob Oldham the top redounder.

Jasper County is 19-2 in seventh-grade play and 7-15 in eighth-grade action.

The seventh-grade squad will compete in the Class 7-3A Red Hill (Bridgeport) Regional Monday against the winner of the Paris Mayo vs. Robinson Nuttall contest. Jasper County is seeded No. 1.
