St. Anthony, Effingham Are Tuesday Evening Boys Basketball Winners

Effingham St. Anthony took the early lead and downed host Flora, 50-39 in a non-conference boys basketball contest Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs edged ahead 12-8 in the opening quarter behind four points by Brock Fearday and Griffin Sehy. 

Collin Westendorf was the four-point scorer in the second frame as the Bulldogs led 24-20 at halftime The two teams played to a 12-12 second period tie.

The two squads remained equal in the third quarter with a 9-9 tie. Fearday scored five and Ryan Schmidt added four and the Bulldogs led 33-29.

St. Anthony then went on a final quarter run, outscoring Flora 17-10 for the 11-point winning margin.

Sehy connected on six of six free throws while Westendorf hit a basket and was four of six at the line. The Bulldogs finished the contest hitting 20 of 30 free throws while Flora was 11 of 13.

Fearday finished with 16 points to lead the Bulldogs while Westendorf added 12 and Sehy 10.

In the junior varsity game, St. Anthony was a 39-30 winner. The Bulldogs were led by Aidan Lauritzen with 12 and Nick Ruholl with 10.

At Effingham

Effingham played host to Dieterich and put another victory on the board by a 54-46 count Tuesday evening.

The Hearts ripped out to a 17-6 opening quarter lead as Logan Heil hit four baskets for eight points and Andrew Donaldson connected for five points on a regular basket and a three-pointer.

The Hearts continued with an 11-9 second period as Garrett Wolfe took over with six points and the Hearts led 28-15 at halftime.

The Maroons mounted a comeback with a 15-7 third period run to pull within 35-30. Caleb Gephart scored 11 of his team's 15 points on five baskets and a free throw. 

The Hearts could muster only one basket and three of five free throws in the quarter.

EHS got back to scoring with a 19-16 final period to nab the victory. Wolf scoed six points and four other players connected in the quarter. Gunner Brown hit a three-pointer and Andrew Splechter and Heil had four points each.

Two players hit double digits for the Hearts. Wolfe connected on five field goals, one a three-pointer, and was four of six at the line for 15 points while Heil hit seven field goals for 14. Spencer Fox added nine points. EHS is now 8-13 on the season.

Dieterich was led by Gephart with 18 on eight field goals and two of four at the line. Westendorf chipped in with nine.
