Mount Zion came calling and claimed a 34-29 seventh-grade win over Effingham St. Anthony in junior high boys basketball Monday evening at Goff Gym.

Mount Zion took an 11-8 opening quarter lead and led 18-15 at halftime and 28-21 going into the final quarter. St. Anthony rallied but couldn't get over the hump.

The Bullpups were led by Cooper Sehy with 10 points.

At Taylorville

Effingham trounced Taylorville in eighth-grade competition Monday.

The Mustangs edged out to an 8-6 opening quarter lead and led 15-10 at halftime. The big quarter came in the third when the Mustangs went on a 19-0 run.

Carter Braddy led the way for the winners with 17 points.

In the seventh-grade contest, Taylorville edged the Mustangs, 50-49 in triple overtime.

Effingham ran out to a 15-2 opening quarter lead and led 23-9 at halftime. Taylorville then came roaring back with a 25-11 second half to knot the score at 34-34. Both teams scored four points in the first overtime and four points in the second overtime. Taylorville then had an 8-7 third overtime for the win.

Jenner Pals scored 27 points to lead Effingham while Carson Fox added 11.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis scored 39 points in both seventh- and eighth-grade play in downing Charleston twice Monday.

In the seventh-grade game, T-town was  39-20 winner. The Wooden Shoes ripped out to a 15-4 opening quarter lead and that was the game.

Jake Probst tallied 15 for the Shoes.

In eighth-grade play, T-town won 39-26. T-town held a 17-11 halftime lead then had a 22-15 second half.

Jake Kocher scored 14 while Kendal Mette added 12 in the win.

At Newton

Jasper County handed Casey-Westfield a 60-13 loss in the Little Eastern Illinois Conference Seventh-Grade Tournament Monday.

Jasper County held a 27-11 halftime lead then had a 22-0 third quarter.

Chance Mulvey led the winners with 12 points while Xander Wilson added 10.

Jasper County improved to 16-1 on the season and will be playing for the championship Wednesday at 7:20 p.m. against Lawrenceville.

At Newton

At Lousiville

North Clay (Louisville) fell to Flora in eighth-grade play but picked up a seventh-grade victory Monday.

North Clay was a 35-27 winner in seventh-grade play.

In the eighth-grade contest, Flora claimed a 43-37 win.

North Clay will be back in action Saturday against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at Brownstown in the first round of the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Tournament.

 

At Effingham

Effingham Sacred Heart and Altamont Lutheran split victories Monday.

Altamont Lutheran won the seventh-grade contest, 60-27. Altamont Lutheran held a 33-19 halftime lead.

McManaway led the winners with 15 points.

Sacred Heart was led by Mooney with 11.

In eighth-grade action, Sacred Heart claimed a 58-43 victory. The Shamrocks trailed Altamont Lutheran 16-11 after the opening quarter and 24-22 at halftime. The Shamrocks then went on a 36-19 second half run.

Traub led the way with 22 while Hecht added 21 and Warner 11 for Sacred Heart.

Altamont Lutheran was led by Bell with 15 and Berg with 12.
