T-town, Dieterich, CHBC, BSE Win; Neoga, Newton Suffer Losses In Girls Basketball

TEUTOPOLIS -- In a preview for the upcoming Highland Girls Basketball  Tournament, Teutopolis played host to Bethalto Civic Memorial and claimed a 50-47 victory Monday evening.

The Wooden Shoes, ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press Class 2A state poll, edged out to an 8-7 opening quarter lead on the Eagles. Kaylee Niebrugge scored half of her team's opening quarter points.

Bethalto came back in the second quarter with an 18-13 run to lead 25-21 at halftime. Avery Huddleston knocked in a regular basket and two three-pointers for eight points while Olivia Durbin hit a three-pointer.

The Shoes still trailed after the third quarter by five points, 42-37. Bethalto had a 17-16 third quarter. But the Shoes stayed close behind Emily Konkel's three-pointer and four of four at the line for seven points.

Then here came Coach Laurie Thompson's crew. Mounting a comeback bid, the Shoes outscored Bethalto 13-5 in the final period to pull out the three-point win.

In that run, Niebrugge connected on a three-pointer and two regular baskets along with a free throw. Chloe Probst was three of four at the line and Molly Ruholl hit a three-pointer. Meanwhile the Shoes' defense kept the Eagles to only five points in the period.

Niebrugge finished with 22 points and nine rebounds for the Shoes. Konkel added 15 points.

T-town and Bethalto will compete in the Highland Tournament beginning Saturday. The Shoes take on Waterloo at 11:30 a.m. while Bethalto doesn't play until 7 p.m. against Taylorville.

At Dieterich

Dieterich took a one-point lead after the opening quarter and went on for a 49-32 victory over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg as two National Trail Conference teams met Monday evening.

The Movin' Maroons held a 13-12 lead as Estella Meinhart scored five points and Ruby Westendorf four. Ella Kinkelaar led the Hatchets with five points.

Dieterich then widened the lead with a 9-2 second period for a 22-14 halftime tally. Both teams scored eight in the third quarter.

The Maroons then finished strong with a 19-10 final quarter as Miley Britton and Heaven Kinnison broke loose with seven points each.

Britton tallied 12 points to lead the Maroons while Westendorf added 10.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Kinkelaar with 16 points, 11 coming in the second half.

Dieterich also nabbed the junior varsity win, 36-30. Brittney Niemerg led the winners with 11 points while Sammi Goebel added 10. WSS was led by Ellie Wittenberg with 14.

At Louisville

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City came out a 50-42 winner over North Clay (Louisville) in National Trail Conference action Monday.

North Clay was an 18-8 opening quarter leader and led 27-19 at halftime. The Bobcats then came back with a 13-6 third period run and finished out with an 18-9 final quarter to pull out the win.

Gracie Heckert led the way for the winners with 20 points on six field goals and eight of eight at the line. Ruby Stuckemyer tallied 11 points. Mady Wojcik led in rebounds with nine. Gracie Heckert had four steals and six assists.

CHBC improved to 12-5 on the season

North Clay was led by Miah Ballard with 16 points on five field goals and six of 10 at the line and Alexis VanDyke with 11 on three three-pointers and a regular basket. The Cardinals dropped to 2-3 in the NTC, 10-7 overall.

Brownstown/St. Elmo claimed a 44-33 win over Wayne City in Monday evening action.

Wayne City held an 8-6 opening quarter lead but BSE came back with an 11-5 second quarter to lead 17-13 at halftime.

BSE had a 12-8 third quarter run and finished out with a 15-12 final quarter.

Lexi Seabaugh was the lone player in double figures for BSE with 16 on six field goals that included two three-pointers, and two of three at the line. Laney Baldrige added eight points.

At Pana

Neoga, ranked fifth in the Associated Press Class 1A poll, suffered only its second loss Monday evening. The Indians fell to Pana, 58-40.

The Panthers held a one-point lead after the opening quarter then went on a 22-10 run that Neoga couldn't overcome.

Two players hit double figures for the Indians. Sydney Richards led the way with 14 points while Brynn Richards added 10.

Neoga drops to 19-2 on the season and will return to action at St. Anthony Thursday.

At Mount Carmel

Newton held a one-point lead at halftime but Mount Carmel came back with a 16-3 third quarter and that was the game as the Eagles fell, 43-36 Monday.

The Eagles held a 10-7 opening quarter lead and led 19-18 at halftime. But the Golden Aces had a 16-3 third quarter then held off a 14-9 final period challenge by the Eagles.

Camryn Martin was the lone Eagles player in double figures with 10. Lilly Kessler led in rebounds with 13. Kessler and Elley Bennett had three steals each. Addy O'Dell had two assists.

Newton falls to 9-10 on the season.

Mount Carmel edged Newton 30-29 in the junior varsity game. Emma Nadler led Newton with 11 points.
